One of our cats, years ago, managed to scare a canary to death without even touching it. It was my auntie's canary and we were looking after it while she was on holiday.

I was cleaning the bedroom the other day and found a bird carcus under my bed side cabinet, no idea how long it had been there. One of our cats is a bird killing machine at time, he even catches hummingbirds. Try to keep him inside cos of it.

You must dread the day the Mounties have a go at "cleaning" the grounds of your hospital...

I think " is it a cat?" is the only question you need to decide if it's a psychopath, isn't it?

This is obviously true. Cats have zero empathy. They are nice and cute only when they want something. As soon as they don’t want anything (food, heat, praise for their ability as serial killers) they would just as much claw your eyes out as do what you want.

They eat you if you die.

"If" you die. Yeah. It was entirely accidental, says the cat. Who ate the evidence.

We have feral cats which live in the barns - okay now we don't have sheep as cats spread disease. We also have a bird table hanging from a branch of a tree which attracts loads of wild birds and the occasional cat. Last week we had a cat in the tree after the birds but as night fell he couldn't find his way down. Next day, still there, refusing to be coaxed down, just glaring at us, so I got the hose out which worked a treat.

He climbed down the hose which you had thrown over the branch?

This weekend I am in Montreal. The weather is absolute dogshit. But apart from that it’s like being in French Canada. Sort of somewhere between being in the US but with nice people; and being in France but with nice people.

Funny how people dislike the French. We probably all know a few nice Frenchies but, collectively, they seem to be rather unpleasant. Dunno why that is. They often seem a bit uptight.

Montreal is still my favourite “French” city from my experience there albeit a few years ago … Best parts of American and French culture together with some great hockey games as I recall…👍

There aren't many national groups that are universally popular, I suppose. Nobody seems to have a bad word about the Canadians. Norwegians and Danes have a nice rep.
I suppose it's an underdog thing and they are despised by their more showy neighbours. Like the Irish: everyone seems to think they're a right lark. They bloody well aren't.

Canadians actually are nice, though. Obviously not all of them, in the same way that some French people actually can be pleasant.
One of the weird, surprising, things about Montreal is that it makes the world’s best bagels. We’re really here to eat - it’s apparently a great eating city (which after about 18 hours seems to be true) - and with the weather like it is we really might not do anything but eat before driving back tomorrow.

Montreal always looks charming but, like so much of Canada, a bit gloomy. Scotland's a bit like that- sort of like living under a sepia filter.
Coincidentally, I spotted on a menu last night that sepia is Spanish for cuttlefish. It's to do with the ink. As I say, a bit bored of family yap now ....
