Made us the (even greater) envy of the world is what you mean. I think most people were thinking “those kooky Brits”.

I think most outside people looked at the massive queue and thought it was kind of charming and quaint, traditional and a bit idiosyncratic and British. I don’t think it was at all damning. It was just a “Britain is weird and old fashioned” thing, like stone Cotswold villages and cream teas and the Beefeaters and cricket on the village green and so on. We were just playing the stereotype a bit.

There would certainly appear to be the space for all 10 miles of it.

There's a slight difference between establishment families and Monarchy, non? Not inasmuch as they perpetuate class systems. But they can be removed, which was entirely my point (as you knew).

I'm not so sure this was quintessentially British, many other nations have had similar laying in state of beloved figures with thousands filing past. The orderly nature of the queue maybe, but I suspect we're not the only people who que in an orderly fashion.

Yeah but the crowds that file past your heroes only do so with AK47s pointed at them.

Not by popular consent they can't.

I don't see anything above suggesting how it can happen. The closest I've got in the last two pages is "The headless man" which even I might consider a bit of an extreme approach and definitely not a popular consent sort of move.

We had this discussion last week. It perfectly possible for the UK to remove the monarchy by plebiscite. It's just that there isn't anything like a significant popular desire to do so.

What if there isn't a desire to remove the monarchy, per se, but just to remove a particular monarch?
Also, while it may be theoretically possible to remove the entire monarchy, there isn't any structure for doing so, the question has never been asked, and we don't know if the results of any such plebiscite would be accepted.
It feels like saying "Of course the North Koreans could get rid of Kim Jong Il, they just need to have a vote on it and for his removal to win that vote".

There doesn't need to be a special structure to do it. You're grasping at straws here.

The monarchy's elected?

Apparently we can get rid of them in an election. He just hasn't told us how and when we have those elections, what the process is for transition once the election has happened, who gets to vote in those elections, how often those elections happen, or - in fact - anything else about those elections. It's almost as if there isn't any formal or constitutional structure in place that allows any of this to happen and it actually basically requires a revolution.
