Supermarkets, even the big ones, generally have only one or two security personnel on duty. One of whom will be monitoring the exit and the other watching CCTV (usually of the booze aisle). They rarely enforce their own policies regarding customer behaviour, unless another customer complains. In short, they don't give a toss. Regarding Waitrose...

Good. My local supermarket, Waitrose, only ever has one security guard, an African gentleman. He must be the most underemployed security guard ever. We don't have to pay a pound deposit for the trolleys either. We're trusted customers.

That's a pretty bloody awful thing to say. It's okay for us to joke about it, but not for bloke like that, on the national broadcaster. It's horribly misjudged.

Apart from when shopping trolleys had child seats in them I don’t think I have ever seen kids in shopping trolleys. Or at least not enough for me to notice.
My local supermarkets are all fairly small though.

The kind of supermarket that makes you question the use of "super".

Aren't they what Americans (and Andy) call "minimarts"? I would have thought soon they would be calling them “supermercados”.

If I was trying to be dreadfully hipster (or lived in New York where it's a proper term) I'd call them "bodegas"

Wannabe hipsters in San Diego (and across the US) who fetishise New York have started calling minimarts (particularly privately owned crappy ones) bodegas.

Proper Victorism here: I emailed the CEO of Tesco on Monday and got a very positive response (from some flunky) totally agreeing with me.
I went back to the store yesterday and saw zero kids being carried improperly in trolleys.
It was encouraging to see and I wrote again to thank them. That's the second nice letter I have written this week: I got new bifocals from Boots last week and their service was really, really good. The optician that helped me was delighted that someone would do that in preference to filling out an online survey.

I expect including a used colostomy bag with the letter, and the promis of "more where that came from" brought the point firmly home for Tesco.

Haha. I haven't thrown one at anyone yet, but it's only a matter of time. Election season will be here soon enough.

Why oh why do we allow massively wealthy people to dodge their obligations? Worse still, why do we give them the trappings of state approval? www.ft.com/content/a92aafc0-5136-489b-8572-0944518e5158The bloke should be publicly shamed, theh hanged from a lamppost, and not with a silken chord.
