It seems silly season stuff. I'm sure the military don't want a bunch of fat cunts being foisted upon them. They just want more money to recruit decent people.

Reading an article about increasing Russian threat this morning, it occurred to me that we, and pretty much most blokes I know, are of an age to be in a Dad's Army style outfit.
Also, like them, I'm sure we'd have a laugh, until getting nuked.

The only people who want conscription or national service are the small cadre of now increasingly old farts who think their time in the military didn't do them any harm and think that the military's job is bullying feckless youths into being pathetically obedient underlings to their betters. People who have somehow persuaded themselves squaddies are universally positive assets to society rather than the same annoying kids who'll go and get pissed up and get into fights as the ones who aren't in the military.
What these fools never think about is how utterly useless conscripts (and even more, National Service types) have been to any military organisation since, probably 1918. Maybe the Soviets and Chinese in the second world war benefited from having huge numbers that they could just march into machine guns to die, but large numbers of untrained idiots really don't make a whole lots of sense when these days most effective military work seems to involve using very expensive tech gear and trying to not get that blown up.

But what function could they perform. Basically cannon fodder? You certainly wouldn't want them flying drones, or even doing maintenance on drones. Perhaps driving equipment around to deliver it to competent people who have had training?

But is "basic training" enough to do any good in modern warfare? I guess as bullet fodder cleaning out trenches like in Ukraine at the moment, but would a modern western war ever get to that stage? Wouldn't any NATO related engagement basically flush all those kinds of things out using ridiculous amounts of missiles and bombs?

I guess it's okay if you're fighting other conscripts. Actual hand-to-hand is pretty rare and, from what I understand, we still do "boots, butts a d bayonets" quite effectively. I think we prefer it. Honest scrapping.
