Given how many times he's broken his word to Democrats, and also given that if Democrats saved him he'd have been permanently unpalatable to the craziest Republicans and therefore permanently dependent on Democrats so he wouldn't have wanted it, there was never going to be a West Wing style grand centrist compromise.

It is very funny.
