Yeah, and no one who voted against the insurrection will ever get the job, Grump hates anyone who didn't allow his coup to go through and would do all he could to scupper anyone not fully on board with his attempts to hold onto power after he lost, so anyone not a full on toady will never get the lunatics to back them.

As someone mentioned, there might be a purge coming in the party. Unfortunately, it might be the moderates who get purged. They should get 5 Reps to just abstain or not show up and let the Dems elect Jeffries. The purge has already happened, all those who stood against the insurrection or tried to call the plotters to count is already gone. Its only the republican party in name only now, in reality its the MAGA cult and the orange overlord has it firmly under his thumb.

Yeah. There's a reason there are almost no centrists and sensibles in the party any more.

Oh and I should add, the biggest reason they want a speaker who backed the last coup, is there is a very good chance, almost a certain one, that should Grump stay out of jail (which he will) and loose again, they'll want the next coup to succeed and having a compliant speaker who has already shown they don't care about democracy will be a big part of that.
And it has to be said, while Biden has done a remarkably good job, I mean last week was his best week so far, he really should stand aside and let someone who's not so old take the nomination. Democracies survival should not rest of an 82 year olds pride.

There aren't "none". The main ones who have left are Cheney, Kinzinger, and Mittens.
Cheney is probably the most conservative of them all but nevertheless was voted out for not pandering to the cultists.

Well okay, Mittens is a senator.

Yeah, let's not pretend any of those were "centrist" in any meaningful usage of the term. They just believe in basic order.

but those who are left are cowed and too cowardly to stand up and be counted. They could end this easily, but the extremists have the whip hand.
Cheney, Kinzinger, and so on knew doing the right thing would end their political career, but saw that as a price worth paying to stand up to the crazies. Non of the ones left who might be nominally moderate have the balls to do the same.

Today's speaker nominee, a far right extremist who was one of the main backers of the coup in 2020. The orange idiot is elated. Obviously, if he gets the job, it's one more step to ensuring the next coup attempt succeeds www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-67213205

He is a complete and utter loon. I wonder, if he succeeds, if he'll even make the faintest motions at getting government to function, at passing legislation. If not, I can't imagine that it will bode well for the 2024 elections in the house. If he does, he'll become a pariah among his supporters very quickly.

Current chatter is that nobody is going to vote against him when it comes to a vote today. He'll almost certainly be speaker.

As expected the loon did indeed win, the GOP, a party in search of a backbone.
Not a great day if you care about the continuance of democratic governance.

The GOP lemmings in the House will be taking orders from Trump even if he's sitting in a jail cell.
No principles at all, their only interest is whatever they think will keep them in power.

US economic growth this quarter was even higher than expected. Bidenomics is once again defying economists' expectations and the doomsaying nonsense of the Republicans.
Meanwhile, the Republicans have spent a month eating their own faces which has resulted in them having to elect someone with absolutely zero track record of anything, because as soon as someone does anything 200 of them will whine about it.

hahaha! does the left want some cheese with that whine? "The Republicans in congress are so unprincipled that they'll take their orders from a disgraced, jailed felon who tried to overthrow an election." "Ha ha, listen to them librels whine!" That says it all really.
