A lot of people wanted the 2012 Olympics to be a failure too. People who hate Britain. It's probably the same in France.

But Mids is right. Whiny middle class locals almost always want the Olympics in their home town to be a failure to prove that they were right to whine about it in the first place. Smug wanky Londoners were at it until a couple of days before the whole thing started in 2012 then went off and enjoyed it all, even dancers bouncing on crappy NHS beds, and have spent the last 12 years telling everyone how great London is at things like hosting Olympics and how it's all a great vibe thing.

Anyway, I fly out to Paris tomorrow afternoon. I'll let you know how much of a sh*t-show it is. I expect transport to venues beyond the peripherique to be a bit of a calamity.

The croissant eating. The croque monsieur eating. The crowded Metro. The air traffic control strike. The avoiding-pavement-dogshit-while-walking.

Also, beach volleyball under the Eiffel Tower. Water polo. Canoe Slalom whitewater stuff. Golf. Opening morning session of the athletics. Ladyfoot quarter finals. And maybe some of the bike road race.

Sounds great although you'll probably get stabbed by North Africans.

Really? MY feeling is that Paris - and particularly the banlieu - is rife with Maghrebians. That's why you get all the couscous and why you have all the grimy but very useful little corner shops around Gares du Nord and Est.

It did get better, but the boat parade felt very low rent.

I see it was the left that tried to disrupt the start of the Olympics. This isn't surprising as the left hate competitive sport with their "all must have prizes" attitude. "France warned on Friday night that the Paris Olympic Games were threatened with further chaos after its high-speed rail network was crippled by sabotage attacks suspected to have been carried out by hard-Left agitators." www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/07/26/france-olympics-games-paris-trains-sabotage/

One of the most amusing reaction to the open ceremony has been the absolutely unhinged outrage from the far right Christians in the US, I mean you expect insane reactions from the insane, but even for them it's been extreme. Aparently the entire thing was put on by Satan and his Deamonds, death was riding a pale horse (the Pegasus bit) a headless demon was reciting devilry, and there was a defilement of the last supper by drag queens.
The right are just inane.

The reason behind the left trying to disrupt the Olympics, is partly I think, due to their always getting picked last for any sport at school. That simmering resentment again.

I think they can be both if they are immigrants. I actually don’t know the split between first generation and those of Maghrebian descent. Your point is a valid one - I was making assumptions.
