Hahaha! Local Government is "Newspeak" and "Levelling Up" is not?
Levelling up is such a terrible bit of bullshitese.

It was the Tippexing out of the old newspeak that made me chuckle.

The irony of cause was leveling up was just a blind to syphon cash into rural Tory seats to try and bolster their failing support.

I genuinely thought that article had it the wrong way round.
How “local government” is newspeak but “levelling up” is not is nonsensical.

"Levelling up" always was a Johnson throwaway line, and hardly the sage aphorism he thought it was. In the end, all he achieved was to almost "dumb down" a whole country to his level.

I see it's already started. "About 1,000 UK jobs are at risk at Dyson as part of a global restructure. The firm, best known for the invention of the bag-less vacuum cleaner, said the decision was made amid fierce competition in global markets. The move would ensure Dyson is "prepared for the future", CEO Hanno Kirner said, adding it will be supporting those at risk of redundancy. Dyson has 3,500 UK employees and offices in Wiltshire, Bristol and London." www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6p2660ldn2o

I was thinking more in terms of being dumb enough to vote for a proven liar, misogynist and philanderer whose demonstrable laziness cost thousands of lives and left the UK with an "oven-ready" Brexit deal that he tried to back out of within weeks - but then obviously he'd dreamt it up on the back of a fag packet.
That's why I used the word "almost", btw; the electorate viewed the horror of the last five years as stemming from Johnson, and the Sunak government paid for it.

The UK has elected the most openly non-religious House of Commons in history, with 40% of MPs taking the secular affirmation over a religious oath to god. This milestone means the UK Parliament is now closer than ever to representing the beliefs of the nation and stands as one of the most non-religious democratic parliaments on the world stage. What’s more, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is among those who are non-religious, as are 50% of the Cabinet.
I think this is good thing.

Wow. I didn't know that Keith was a member of the same non-church as me. He always gave the impression that he'd have a Blairite, Blair-lite faith-of-convenience to appeal to the Daily Mail classes.

In addition to the lack of religiosity in parliament, the new cabinet had only one member who went private school, plus one at grammar school (Starmer). The other 23 went to Comprehensives. Which is great, and reflects the country much better than any previous cabinet. (94% of the UK public went to state schools)
Compare with the combined cabinets of Truss and Sunak which were only 19% state educated.

Seculism in government is the ideal. Time we got rid of the state religion and the head of state also being the head of a church

Good. They might be about to do something right. Good. "A ban on puberty blockers could be made permanent as the Labour Party takes a harder stance on transgender issues, The Telegraph can reveal. Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, intends to stop powerful hormone blockers being given to children via any means, subject to the outcome of a legal hearing. Laws to ban the blockers being supplied to children by private or off-shore clinics were passed by Victoria Atkins, his predecessor, in emergency legislation ahead of the general election." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/12/labour-ban-puberty-blockers-permanently-trans-stance/

I assume the old direct grant changeover.

Seculism in government is the ideal. Time we got rid of the state religion and the head of state also being the head of a church Why? The head of state has long-since declared himself to be a supporter of all faiths, and none. It seems rather bigoted to insist that the HoS should have no religious affiliation.
