How do you think our ancestors survived ? No luxury imported foods for them - Back to the hedgerows ! (Blackberries, Sloes, Mushrooms, Crab Apples, thingyles, Mussels, Whelks - the list is endless) Exactly BC, they fed themselves using , by our standars primitive tools, There is no reason why we could not feed ourselves if we so choose. Grow food, not flowers. In days of years yester, Runner beans were grown for flowers and food, an Apple tree in full blossom is great, as are so many other fruit trees. I am about 60% self sufficient, I just can't grow enough bananas and oranges.

"It appears that we are 60% self efficient agriculturally. No doubt if it was necessary, and they knew the produce would be sold, farmers could up that production."
You think its that easy eh ? Presuming for minute that the UK produces 60% of what it uses in food ( and I dont for 1 minute ) it makes you wonder how the remaining 40% isnt taken up by bananas and mangos alone. Dream on .

I can't argue with your figures yord, because I don't know.
But
The UK could be self sufficient in food production.

I'm from farming stock, yord, and live in a farming community with farming neighbours. Farms aren't producing anything near to 100% capacity. They would all like to up production if the limits were upped and they knew they could sell their produce. If there was no import of foreign food people would have to buy home produced and the farmer's produce would sell. They are businesses . They aren't going to work their a$$es off to see little return. Give them a morket and take off their imposed production limits and they'll give us all we need to live healthily, if not luxuriously.

neither do I Scooby and dont need to . There thousands of bits of data out there if you want to research it but who needs to . We all know or should do that the UK dosnt produce a fraction of what is needed

Its leading to Government, to subsidies, to price control, to EU regulation and a host of other stuff
Basically, the UK could grow enough food for its population.

Hopefully the Black Death will spread within their cells and wipe more of them out, so you won't have to exert yourself radge! There's plenty more in the woodwork though! Thre's a chance we could be of help though. All of those used National Health dressings that are thrown away could be sent to them for re-use and all those used hypodermic syringes lying around waste ground and streets in our cities are just going to waste.

unemployment in the UK reaches epidemic proportions. Stirling continues to slide into obscurity. Government nationalises banks. Government starts printing money just to pay benifits to keep population in check. Inflation goes through the roof.Homes are repossed by government banks. Council tax bills cant be met, people are forced into selling their morgage free home, in just the same way as the old are forced into selling if they are taken into care.Government introduces working for benifits which is madatory , in an occupation that they require and dictate.

Ye gods, yord, you get stranger every day. In the middle of the war, with blockades, bombings and thousands of men and young women in the forces unavailable for work, the country geared up to military spending and just about as broke as a country can get. we still managed to avoid the ills you are dreaming up for us.
It's not going to be easy for a few years, people are going to have to cut back hard, and a lot of people will find themselves much worse off than they are now,but it's not the end of the world and the government isn't going to kill us off piecemeal as a cost cutting measure.
