Does this mean the end of affirmative action? Can we declare it a success and no longer needed?

I think for USers it's a big deal, bearing in mind that we're only talking decades (well within living memory) since segregation and the fact that the first x many presidents could have legally owned him and whatnot.
Why the rest of the world is quite so thrilled over it makes less sense.
My Amurkin dad has just rung me. He said "Jesus Fn Christ, if they don't stop all this hailing him as the Saviour after the inauguration is done with I am going to fn puke myself to death."

VHW is right, from what you hear on news you'd think Obama was a cross between the Lone Ranger and Superman

I dunno why the rest of the world is excited. Maybe they are just happy to see the back of Bush?
All they seem to be excited that the US has 'turned over a new leaf' as if the rest of the world is so much more open-minded and egalitarian than the US?
Anyway Jimbo, after being here and watching non-stop programmes I finally understand the logic behind AA. Still disagree with it passionately (including the kind that sees rich parents buying their dumb kids places at top unis) but I at least understand the thought process.

We've just heard from Vania, our grazing correspondent, that President elect Obama has arrived in Washington before a record crowd of hysterical well-wishers, rejects from TV evangelist audiences, and Newyorker hoping that Obama will cure him of gayness.

I think it all kicks off at about 5pm UK time doesn't it?!

I sincerely doubt that potentials for evangelists audiences will be out to see Obama...
Plus Obama has been in Washington for a while now, and not even I'm excited enough to head to Washington. Cold and crowded and stretching back over a mile? No thank you.

It's a big deal for the rest of the world because we have someone who says he won't screw the environment, and promises to invest not to. Which helps us.
We have someone who seems more disinclined to random evidence and sense free wars with tin pot middle-eastern countries, making us safer.
We have someone who's not a complete retard in charge of the world's biggest economy during a time of crisis. Which means that the recession may not be as bad as it would have been under Cheney.
But apart from boosting our health, safety and wealth, and generally making the world a better place, I have no idea why we're excited.

Oh, didn't he arrive on an ass and travel over streets paved with palms? And don't you have to be there naked? The sight of a unclad Vania heading towards the holy president is sure to have the Secret Service screaming for an elephant gun or maybe a landrover and a tranquiliser dart.

Hey Nu Yorker, it's not as bad as I thought it would be actually! Much better than last week anyway, I think it's hovering around -2/-3 today. I have my boots, hat and scarf so I'm ok.
Plus my aunt's place is a Sauna so maybe when I head out it will hit me. Plus I'm hard me...I spent two winters in Montreal. New York is nothing compared to that.

No Ricky. There are these incredible things called 'cars' and he arrived in one of those. You should google it, the particular one he was in he commonly referred to as 'a limo'.
Update he has just left church (just for Ricky.)

I meant though that I'm not so sure why the rest of the world is quite so excited about him being a Not White. Because, whilst I appreciate there are those on this board who could discuss some of his policies, most of the "ooh exciting innit" commentary I have hard centres around him being The First Black Man In The Whitehouse.

Cars you say? A limo you say? Was he driving it? Will some Washington cop pull him up and ask him where he got it?

Whether we support Barack Obama or not, we have to hand it to him just for being the first black American President, pretty amazing feat in itself! The rest remains to be seen . . .

Ricky, if you educated yourself on things outside of your circle you may understand why it's kind of a big-deal that the first non-white was voted into office in the US.
I would expect the same excitement if ever a woman was elected ruler of Saudi Arabia...(yes I have a vivid imagination).
I don't however understand why the rest of the world is reporting it in the manner they are (as if America has finally entered the modern era).

Erm no Ricky, he wasn't driving it, they typically have chauffeurs for that.
Ah I think I understand the rest of the world excitement now based on something Faux News reporter just said, he said it's a uniquely 'American experience'. Maybe they partially agree with that sentiment?
