Vanny, if you talked out of anything apart from your circle I might pay attention. Fat chance though, chubby.

The inauguration of an American president is a uniquely American experience? Well with incisive reporting like that I can well understand why Fox has such an enviable reputation as a quality news outlet.

I don't however understand why the rest of the world is reporting it in the manner they are (as if America has finally entered the modern era). Yeah, hypocrites, it's not like we've seen any black Prime Ministers elected in Europe. It's Europe that needs to enter the modern era. (Enjoying smug sanctamonious superiority).

Sure, all of that. I meant though that I'm not so sure why the rest of the world is quite so excited about him being a Not White. Because, whilst I appreciate there are those on this board who could discuss some of his policies, most of the "ooh exciting innit" commentary I have hard centres around him being The First Black Man In The Whitehouse. Oh. Right. I guess I've been tuning out the "ooh! look at the poor black man!" narrative because it's a load of tedious cock. I've hardly really noticed it recently.

To be fair to us in Europe, we've not had a substantial black population for more than 50 years, really, unlike the US who's had one for 200 years. And nowhere is the percentage much higher than 5% or so, unlike in the US where it's nearer 20 or 30%.

Vike, In fairness Obama has said the same thing many a time. Not merely the election of a US president but the election of a man not from the normal routes of power from such a unusual background.
Nu Yorker, :-)
But seriously a lot of the (mainly liberal) comment here has tended to assume that the election of Obama, considering his ethnicity shows that America is finally in the 21st century. But in fairness minorities and people of varied background are for more visible in all areas of US society than they are in most European countries.
So I guess I will permit you to have a smug grin, for a while but don't get used to it.
I haven't really noticed any 'first black man narrative'. Well they mention it as one (in fairness pretty big) thing and then go off onto his policies. I guess people focus on things that are important to them.

They've mentioned the "First Black Man re-writing the history books" here in the UK many times. After the inauguration, they will start to nit pick over his policies etc. Give it time lol!

20-30% Fandy? Are you counting all non-white Americans as 'black'? Surely you mean 12%?
They mention it Libby but, it ceases to be the focus on anything I've watched. I'm seeing it more today, but that's because a) I'm in the US b)It was MLK day yesterday.
Right I'm off to brave the cold and the crowds. Will fill you in later!

He's actually just an American version of that well known Scottish saviour of all mankind, Gordon Brown.

A wonderful thing for ethnic diversity in America and everywhere. In Britain, a smack across the chops for the anti-immigrant brigade. After that, business as usual. Obama is just as white underneath as George Bush, although much smarter

How's it a smack for the anti-immigrant brigade? Is this a second use for the stuff, you've been drinking it?
