US President Barack Obama said he was dispatching new Mideast envoy George Mitchell to shore up the fragile truce in Gaza, as Israel warned it would strike again if Hamas is allowed to rearm. Both Obama and United Nations officials also called on Israel to open Gaza border crossings. "As part of a lasting ceasefire, Gaza's border crossings should be open to allow the flow of aid and commerce," Obama said, during his first visit to the State Department as president. UN humanitarian chief John Holmes said the borders must be opened to allow reconstruction of the enclave. <snip> [large amount of c&p removed - please dont copy more than a sentence or two with your link - copyright issues are complicated] AFP www.smh.com.au/news/world/obama-urges-israel-open-gaza-crossings-to-aid/2009/01/23/1232471540580.htmlFinally a president with balls ! With the massive money raised in the Arab world to reconstruct Gaza and now Obama urging the borders be opened , hopefully the people of palestine can begin to get back on their feet again ! [/

Hamas are no more a terrorist than Nelson Mandela was .
Both are /were trying to free their people from injustice and persecution .
Resistance movements have every right to defend their patch of dirt from aggression .
All Israel has to do is open the borders and stop occupying land which does not belong to them !

Ignorance is bliss, and warofwords is in euphoria. Hamas considers all of Israel to be Muslim land, to be taken by Jihad. The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) [..] "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory). [...] "The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. " [...] "The Day of Judgement will not come about until Muslims fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Muslims, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)." [...] "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors." www.mideastweb.org/hamas.htm

You fail to mention where the hate started ...........Do some research on Ben Gurions diary entries ............A long time before the creation of Hamas ..Hamas has a legitimate right to respond to this hatred and aggression
What a dreadfully hateful man Ben Gurion was
Ben-Gurion wrote in his diary on 12 July 1937: “the compulsory transfer of the Arabs from the valleys of the projected Jewish State…. We have to stick to this conclusion the same way we grabbed the Balfour Declaration, more than that, the same way we grabbed at Zionism itself.”
5 October 1937, Ben-Gurion wrote in a letter to his 16 year old son Amos: “We must expel the Arabs and take their places…. And, if we have to use force-not to dispossess the Arabs of the Negev and Transjordan, but to guarantee our own right to settle in those places- then we have force at our disposal.”
Ben-Gurion, Zichronot [Memoirs], Vol. 4, p. 299

Next, you'd be re-inveting the Protocols of the Elders of Zion - perhaps that is what you are already working on. Your hatred of Jews and your ignorance know no bounds. Smarter people than you will know historical facts: 1920 Palestine riotsThe annual Nabi Musa spring festival was instituted by Salah ad-Din to ensure a Muslim presence in Jerusalem during the influx of Christian pilgrims celebrating the Easter holiday. Arab educator and essayist Khalil al-Sakakini described how tribes and caravans would come with banners and weapons.[3] By 10:30 a.m. on April 4, 1920, 60,000-70,000 Arabs had already congregated in the city square, and groups of them had already been attacking Jews in the Old City's alleys for over an hour; the Jews hid. Inflammatory anti-Zionist rhetoric was being delivered from the balcony of the Arab Club. One inciter was Hajj Amin al-Husayni; his uncle, the mayor, spoke from the municipal building's balcony. The editor of the newspaper Suriya al-Janubia (Southern Syria), Aref al-Aref, delivered his speech on horseback. The crowd shouted "Independence! Independence!" and "Palestine is our land, the Jews are our dogs!"[3] Arab police joined in applause, and violence started.[9] The Arab mob ransacked the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem, attacked pedestrians and looted shops and homes. They ripped open their quilts and pillows, sending up clouds of feathers associated by Jews with the European pogroms. The Torath Chaim Yeshiva was raided, and Torah scrolls were torn and thrown on the floor, and the building then set alight.[3] During the next three hours, 160 Jews were wounded.[9] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920_Palestine_riots1929 Hebron massacreThe Hebron Massacre refers to the mass murder of sixty-seven Jews on 23 and 24 August 1929 in Hebron, then part of the British Mandate of Palestine, by Arabs incited to violence by false rumors that Jews were massacring Arabs[1] in Jerusalem and seizing control of Muslim holy places. This massacre, together with that of Safed, sent shock waves through Jewish communities in Palestine and across the world. [...] In total, 67 Jews were murdered in Hebron; 59 died during the riots and 8 more succumbed to their wounds later. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1929_Hebron_massacre

He also said that they would assist in the stopping of smuggling of weapons. I have no problem with the shipping of humanitarian Aid and letting comerce flow as giving the Palestinians a via economy is one of the best ways to reduce the influence of extremists by giving the people a stable economy and some hope that things will get better.
However if they continue to ship in arms along the same route then I don't blame the Israeli's for keeping the routes closed.

If the open the borders again and there is one more suicide bombing I would close it for good,, and stuff them,,,,Remember these suicide bombings are targeting civilians only.

Ship food, medical and goods route stays open enough for all Palestinians to grow economically and socially . Choose weapons and forgo that. If Hamas truly cares about the people it's a no brainer.

There is no solution to any problem in any ME Country. These problems have been going on for years, no side is willing to compramise. When you get to that position, any action is futile.

Sorry got to disagree Scooby. Although Israel and Eygpt may never be what you consider "friends" at least they are not fighting all out wars every couple of years. It may not be much but at least it's progress. Even Libya has changed it's ways.

I never thought I would see a peace in Northern Island but it's happening. The Israeli's and Arabs are never going to be friends but you don't have to be. After all even North And South Korea have avoided all out war despite disliking each other. What it's going to take a person with the wisdom of Solomon one side and the wisdom of Saladin on the other.

Choose weapons and forgo that. If Hamas truly cares about the people it's a no brainer. You are advocating a Warsaw Ghetto solution. Gaza is completely closed off from the outside world, by land, sea and air. If no food and other supplies go in, they die. Whether you blame armed resistance groups for not surrendering or those who are actually enforcing the blockade is immaterial. The Palestinians die. The difference with the historical Warsaw Ghetto is that they die where they stand with no need to ship them off to extermination camps. Despite your comfort with this 'no-brainer' solution, I think your suggestion is not going to be followed by the Israeli government. Do you really think the Israelis are planning a holocaust?
