www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1127371/Food-police-come-knocking-kitchen-door--tell-leftovers.htmlWhen you are preparing a meal, the last thing you need is an unwanted caller at the door - especially one armed with advice about what to do with the leftovers. But in a Government initiative to reduce the amount of food that is thrown away, officials are quizzing householders on their doorsteps about food consumption and how best to make use of their freezers. The 'food champions' also offer home cooks advice on what portion sizes to prepare as well as recipe ideas to use up leftover scraps. But the officials, who will also explain the difference between 'best before', 'use by' and 'sell by' dates, have been dismissed as 'food police' by campaigners who said the scheme was the latest example of Government 'nannying'. In a trial in six local authorities across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, the officials have been recruited on full-time contracts to visit an estimated 24,500 homes dispensing dietary advice and tips on how best to reduce the estimated one-third of all food bought which is thrown away. They will call at homes throughout the day, including lunchtimes and in the early evening, when many people will be busy preparing dinner. If successful, the eightweek trial could be rolled out to other authorities around the country.

Oh yes.
It's not the fault of the folk doing the surveying that the government is Big Brother personified. They are doing what they are paid for...they just aren't going to disturb my mealtimes to do it.

We get policed for wasting food scraps, who polices the Government for wasting £1.000,000's on crackpot schemes?

Never throw away leftovers, either go in the freezer for lunchtime next day (his, not mine!), or in the dog, or in the cats. It's very rare to have leftovers here anyway, you get to know the right quantities to cook for a meal, and if anyone is still hungry there's always something handy for dessert.
Like Puffin says, the callers are only doing a job of work, but I will still send them packing - nicely!

"If successful, the eightweek trial could be rolled out to other authorities around the country."
How are they going to judge this then?
"officials have been recruited on full-time contracts "
Ah - looks like they are going ahead then, else why recruit permies for an 8 week trial? or is this typical gov idiocy...

If the government think they know better than me what portion size is appropriate for my appetite and the amount I've exercised in the day and how long it's been since I had a meal and just how gluttonous I'm feeling, and are going to barge in whilst I'm shovelling pizza down my throat, I will be quite upset.

Although, to be fair to the government, it is a Daily Mail article so it's probably a bunch of stupid, exaggerated bollocks, and they're probably going to just print some leaflets that are on display in GP practises or something.

Full time just means they are working full time, that they're on contracts says they are not permanent. I don't think it's such a terrible idea. If anyone wants to give me free advice on how to save money I'll take it.

There won't be much to see in my house, every scrap gets eaten, by either me, hubby, sons, daughter or dogs! Never any food waste! Even the birds get the stale bread - there isn't much of that either! We would soon send the Food Police packing!

As Sushi said you get to know how much to cook for a meal and have some fillups available if anyone wants more. Fruit, cake/s in the cake tin and yoghurt in the fridge. The only food related items that get thrown away in my house are peelings and they go on the compost heap.

Or maybe they just needed a job? There are a lot of folk out there made newly redundant who would do any job rather than be on the dole.
