I don't think I've mentioned it on the new site yet, so, if you want to learn how to read the very clever subtext of articles like that, you should read Bad Science by Ben Goldacre.
The subtext, by the way, is this:
Daily Mail editors and bosses are complete retards
They think everyone else is as stupid as them
If we scare enough people enough of the time, we'll be able to control the minds of the masses
That article is almost certainly planted by some agency working for a pharma company or a soft drinks company or someone who is trying to work on an anti-cancer treatment or with caffeine free beverages
If you read the article you'll realise there's no evidence for any of this at all - and even if the study is proved right, that embryonic DNA is damaged by caffeine, there's actually rarely any evidence that this will follow through to any condition once the child is born.

Why do we let these left wing papers get away with this? Although I'm more disappointed in "Dr" Marcus Cooke "PhD". The whole thing sounds a bit shoddy.

A good likelihood that an epidemiological study over something with huge amounts of background noise would make a connection? Hmmmmmm.
Even if that were true, the headline "New Evidence That Starbucks Kills Unborn Babies" is a little wrong.

The Mail exhibits all the symptoms of leftyism. Hysteria, racism, poor understanding of science etc. The very definition of left wingery, in fact. The editor is also known to be a big supporter of left winger-in-chief, Dr Gordon Brown PhD.

An interesting study would be:
The correlation between tabloid 'newspapers' and blood pressure.
Whenever I read the cr@p that they publish, I can feel mine rising to volcanic levels.

Bad science !? I can't be arsed to read the article...It is about the myth of global warming , right ? The funny thing is that, even though it's a really, really easy target, the book doesn't even start on the bad science of climate change denial (or, also, the creationist types). It sticks to much less controversial stuff like the homopaths and pharma companies and the people who say things like "coffee kills babies". |

I bought this book for my dad on your recco, Andy.
I was talking to a pregnant the other day about alcohol, I said I'd read in the English press that you can get almost a bit pissed once a week and it won't do your sprog any harm, she said that it's the same as giving spirit to a baby and babies can DIE from a teaspoon of spirit. Who's right?
