FACT alert: the bairns thing, which they use a lot in the North East, is a Scandy relic from Viking times. In Swedish child is barn. Also, Scots sometimes say "stop greeting" when they mean stop crying, I will eat my own legs if that's not also from the Scandy (Swedish for to cry is "gråta").
Linguistic spoddery ends.

See this is why we cannot be too hard on other cultures when our own english speaking cultures cannot get it right !

Victor, why do you assume that their English isn't as good as, if not better than the language you heard them speak?Sorry Vania, I don't assume. I know. I lived with this community as I grew up. The families spoke Urdu or Bangladeshi back then as their first language in their homes, and many still do today. In 2000, the headteacher of my old Primary School won an award in the Pride of Britain Awards for her work in trying to sort the school out. www.prideofbritain.com/contentpages/winners/2000/gehane-gordelier.aspxThis is from the school's 2007 Ofsted report:- Harry Gosling is an above average sized school. Most pupils are from Bangladeshi backgrounds although a few other ethnic groups are represented. All pupils speak English as their second language and the percentage of pupils who are at the early stages of learning English is high.Believe me, the majority of kids, even at the top end of the school's age scale (11), have a poor (or at least below average) grasp of the English language, as they are not encouraged to speak it anywhere but at school.

I really love the different accents and way we speak in the British Isles. I'm no widely enough travelled to know whether any other country has such a rich diversity in how English and its variant forms are spoken (No forgetting Gaelic and Welsh of course) but here it - in my opinion - is a huge cultural asset.
I love the Geordie - well its almost Scots anyway, the Scouse, Cockney - I mean the real broad original no Estuary, West Country, Brummie .... and the Doric spoken by people in the north east of Scotland which I canny understand a bit!
Brilliant the lot of them.

I like the West Country accent. Although it does work in the same way as a Southern states US accent, if you hear it your brain automatically assumes a 50 point IQ reduction in the speaker. It is actually possible to be possessed of such an accent and not stupid though.
Geordie is an abomination.
