It's all down to what's in the mind of the person saying it, and one of the reasons we use emoticons in here. Written words quoting what someone has said loses a lot in the transition.
I have called people names to their faces, most are friends who know me well, and are aware it's banter - one friend for years has called me an 'Old Bag', even when we were in our 20's. Put that in the news and she could be accused of ageism, or insulting me. But she's doing neither.
Oh, and the person who went scurrying off to the press with this little gem holding out their hand, or anyone like that, is in my opinion the lowest of the low.

This tells you a lot about this "debate" in the modern context, I reckon..
"The British National Party have sparked a new row by advertising Golliwog dolls for sale at its Christmas party. A flyer sent out by the party this week advertising a Christmas quiz and social evening set to take place at Ore Community Centre in Old London Road on Monday night.
Alongside the time and details of the festive bash was a line advertising a wide range of Golliwog merchandise on sale and it is this that has caused the most outrage.
Nick Prince, the leader of the local BNP, defended the decision to sell the dolls. He said they also sold Golly fridge magnets and a range of patriotic toys such as teddy bears with England flag t-shirts on.
He said: "Golliwogs are traditional toys which pre-date teddy bears by five years.
"People have a choice whether or not to buy them. If they offend people then they should not buy one.
"There is huge demand for Golliwog toys. We have actually sold out but we will be getting more in stock."

I'm saying that a word becomes racist when the person who uses it intends it to be Some words are racist in themselves, n*gger being one of them. There is no way anyone using that word can be unaware that it's about the most offensive racial epithet going. Gah, I much prefer Swedes on this issue. It's recognised that certain words are offensive and nobody attempts to disagree because it's like arguing that the sun rises in the West. People still use them, but at least they don't weasel out of it by pretending they don't see why it's offensive.

I really can't understand why some people here have such a problem with that. Seems so simple to me.

Gah .And I much prefer that people understand that ngger became an offensive word because of how it was used .It was used in a derogatory manner and now is never seen as anything else ,except when blacks use it amongst themselves .Then its ok

Oh, and they have a chocolate ball covered in cocount flakes thingy here that used to be called n*ggerballs. Because the word is so offensive in English (in English mind, it actually never was in Swedish) they changed the name to Coconut balls. Society did not crash. A few people moaned and everyone just thought they were plonkers and got on with life.

Gollies are still a fave toy with children, all the kids in my family have one and shops do still sell them - and out of them too. There's a real toy shop on the moors in North Yorkshire that only sells traditional toys, and he says he can't get enough of them, he has a waiting list! Nothing rasict in them in my view, it's all in the eye of the beholder. I saw loads of them on sale when on holiday in Yorkshire last year, from stuffed toys to keyrings. After unsuccessfully tryiing to get them banned, the PC brigade have now settled on renaming them "Gollies", not "Gollywogs".

Clearly Sweden's vocal rightwing fcukwitted minority doesn't drown out the sensible majority with it's hysterical screaching like it does in the UK.

No, that is one of the reasons I moved here. It's also one of the reasons I can read the press without wanting to cry or seriously hurt someone.

The only way of avoiding the depressing nature of Britain and it's cokcfaced vocal rightwing minority without having to learn a new language is to stop giving a crap about current affairs, stop reading papers, stop watching the news and so on.
I'm trying my best.

Oh just bite the bullet and learn a new language and get out. Try French, that's basically the same as English, easy, and didn't you want to go to France? Life is much nicer on the outside.

If I could afford to do it, and could get work somewhere else, then I'd seriously think about it.

I think you might have to sacrifice cricket and real ale or fewer rightwingdickwads. Actually, maybe there's a link between the presence of cricket in a country and rightwingdickwaddery. Ban cricket just to be on the safe side.

What's the over-vocal rightwing dickwad count like in Ireland? That seems to be favourite at the moment.

If saying something is offensive - and, frankly, everyone knows that "gollywog" is offensive and has racial connotations at nest - and not saying it does nobody any harm at all, then why would you continue to use it, unless you are consciously trying to offend. It's like swearing. I swear with the conscious intention of causing some degree of shock. If I use a term which I know to be racially sensitive and which causes offense, then it's pretty obvious that I'm either being racist, or being juvenile and testing how people react to how I'm intending to shock them.
Either way, it's just rude. Well, rude and stupid. Well, rude and stupid and nasty. +
