"South Koreans kick off efforts to clone extinct Siberian cave lions""Two infant prehistoric big cats - dating from Pleistocene times - were found in a 'sensational' discovery last year, as disclosed by The Siberian Times. The cubs were dug from their icy grave 'complete with all their body parts: fur, ears, soft tissue and even whiskers', said Dr Albert Protopopov, head of the mammoth fauna studies department of the Yakutian Academy of Sciences." 'You have to understand, the lion cub is very small, so it was not possible to take as much as we would like. In addition, the material is highly degraded, it is partially mummified, but the part that was in the ice, preserved very well. We managed to take some samples of skin along with the muscle tissue, and we hope that we will find what we want in these samples.' siberiantimes.com/science/casestudy/news/n0606-south-koreans-kick-off-efforts-to-clone-extinct-siberian-cave-lions/"Stem-cell plan aims to bring rhino back from brink of extinction""The northern white rhinoceros is a species waiting for extinction. (waiting? makes it sound like they are looking forward to it) Its three remaining individuals, kept in a well-guarded Kenyan conservation park, cannot breed naturally. A 15-year-old female named Fatu could be the last of a creature that once roamed central African savannahs by the thousands." www.nature.com/news/stem-cell-plan-aims-to-bring-rhino-back-from-brink-of-extinction-1.19849I suppose if the stem cell approach fails, they could save tissue for cloning attempts.

"Horrifying Photograph Of Elephant And Calf On Fire Wins Top Wildlife Photography Award""In this jarring photograph, an adult elephant and its calf, startled and set ablaze, are desperately trying to escape a ball of flames. Up ahead in the distance, there’s a crowd of jeering men who have just throw flaming tar balls and firecrackers at them." “For these smart, gentle, social animals who have roamed the sub-continent for centuries, hell is now and here,” Sanctuary Asia, a well-established wildlife magazine based in Mumbai, said in a statement accompanying the photograph. www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/shocking-photograph-of-elephant-and-calf-on-fire-wins-top-wildlife-photography-award/What the hell is wrong with people,,,especially in that part of the world. Yeah, the west has it's scum sucking trophy "hunters," and have driven species to extinction, and still has animal cruelty, but at least we're trying to change. Abuse of wildlife by Asians just keeps gaining steam. They are wiping Africa clear of wildlife so they can have their magic dick stiffening medicines or ivory trinkets.

"Mexico creates vast new ocean reserve to protect 'Galapagos of North America'""The measures will help ensure the conservation of marine creatures including whales, giant rays and turtles." "Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, announced the decision in a decree that also bans mining and the construction of new hotels on the islands." "The area is a breeding ground for commercially fished species such as tuna and sierra. However, the various fish populations had suffered, unable to reproduce fast enough for the rate at which they were fished." "The creation of a marine reserve is expected to help them to recover, as all fishing activities will now be prohibited. This will be policed by the Mexican navy." “It wasn’t an easy decision because they had significant opposition from the commercial fishing industry, which I think is unfortunate,” Rand said. “I would love to see a commercial industry embrace this notion that certain areas should be protected.” (you would think the fishing industry would want to preserve fish, but they don't. Canadas fishing industry wiped out cod. Result? Fishermen lost their livelihood) www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/04/18/canada-overfishing-cod-stock_n_3111173.html"The United Nations convention on biological diversity aims to protect 10% of the world’s oceans by 2020." (not enough by any stretch) "However, some experts argue that protecting 30% of the world’s oceans from exploitation and harm would be a more appropriate goal in the drive for a more sustainable planet. Just 6% of the global ocean has been set aside as marine protected areas or been earmarked for future protection." "Conversely, President Trump is considering shrinking two marine national monuments in the Pacific: Rose Atoll and the Pacific Remote Islands. These would be opened to commercial fishing, along with the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts, off the coast of New England, the Washington Post has reported." www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/nov/25/mexico-creates-vast-new-ocean-reserve-to-protect-galapagos-of-north-americaThis is great news. Lets hope Peña Nieto's successor doesn't overturn it.

Would overturn George Bush's decision to protect them.

fascinating stuff, the oldest colonial tree is estimated to be between 800,000 to a million years old, its not a single trunk as the bristle pine is, but a root system that lives on and spouts new trunks from tome to time en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pando_(tree)

I've driven past the turn-off to Ancient Bristlecone Forest quite a few times, but never made the turn. Because the turn is on CA 395, which is a stunning road along the sharp eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada with 14,000 foot granite mountains on one side, and Death Valley on the other; often driving from Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoiah. A three of four hour diversion to see a scraggly tree - no matter how good its backstory - is almost certain to be a let-down in comparison.

The trees beauty, or lack of, isn't the point. I would love to just sit by it and think about how it's outlived all the civilizations and empires in history. And give it a gentle hug.
