Eagle's coup, aka the 'Chicken coup'. Turkey's coup. What is it with these unrestful Avians?

I think you are right wk, this will probably fail, already reports of units fighting back and helicopters getting shot down by jets loyal to the gov and special forces in Ankora retaking government buildings.

Fox news and the rabid right are funny as feck, saying the ones overthrowing the democratic gov are the good guys and Obama is a chump for issuing statments of support for the democratically elected president.
True colours again, the right hate hate democracy.

I've been wondering for years if, and when, this would happen. The Turkish military have a long history of defending secularism over democracy, and the Erdogan government has been getting more and more tied to its Islamic roots.
But I just don't see how a coup like this can succeed. Turkey may not be fully modern, but it's modern enough that people must know that Erdogan has popular legitimacy even if he is a dangerous, anti-secular, Putin-like strong man.
It's hard to see how you can make a solid case for the military, here, even though I basically want them to succeed.

Reading up a bit more, it appears that lots of people are considering this to be entirely set up by Erdogan to boost his power.
It's his Reichstag fire.

sh*t, have I missed it? Looks like the shortest, crappest coup in history. It's like the remainers with their petitions and "legal" challenges- over before it's begun.

Yeah, they should have Benn and Eagle to help them out. They know how to do a long, crap coup.

Still not much detail on this, is there?
Sounds like the progressive, secular parts of the military may have been behind this. The stabce of the air force is often a useful indicator. In this case, the frequent liaison with the yanks may be a factor. Certainly Erdigan has been quite forthright in blaming Turkish elements living in the States.
I wonder what the Kurds have to say about this.

I read somewhere or other that the Kurds would probably prefer Erdogan to the military, for the supremely pragmatic reason that e didn't kill them as enthusiastically as the army does.

I've said it before (but that's never stopped me saying it again)
Let the Kurds have their Whey.

It's a big worry for the huge Turkish community in London. They have family back home and quit a lot of British Turks will be vacationing there as well.

I remember when Lebanon was the secure and settled playground of the eastern Mediterranean. Hope this doesn't happen to Turkey. Getting too close for comfort.

BBC Global news reporting that at least 45,000 people have been rounded up, sacked or suspended from their jobs by Turkey's government in the wake of last week's failed coup.
The purge of those deemed less than loyal to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan widened on Tuesday to include teachers, university deans and the media.
Bye bye democracy, such as it was. It looks like it's becoming Islamified with a dictator, and his corrupt family, at the helm. I really can't believe that all those 45,000 were involved in the coup and nobody, least of all Erdogan, knew before hand what they were up to.
So since the media has been virtually silenced will we ever know if Turkey brings back the death penalty? Today's actions show there is a purge going on to remove all those who don't show allegiance to Erdogan's fascist regime. I wonder if Germany is preparing for an influx of Turkish refugees, because they might be arriving soon, and not by helicopter either. What a mess, but the good thing is that Turkey has no chance now of getting into the EU any time soon.
