Except that Konta's been British since she was a teenager, has lived in Britain a very long time, sounds British, even managed to lose in the semi-final like a British player should. Unlike Budd, it's not a badge of convenience.
Not that it matters. Someone who holds a British passport is British. Humphries was coming over a bit 70s-NF with that ludicrous question.

Well, she's 26 yrs old now, so, yes 7 yrs a Brit teenager, and represented Australia until 2012
Yup, can't get more British than that.

It was a bit of a cockish question but I always find the question of identity is such an interesting/confusing one for those of us who have lived in many places.
When I was just in Israel people asked where I was from and I answered "Australia" because I was travelling on my Aussie passport. But only after some hesitation. And really I don't feel Aussie, I just see myself as a Brit.
Yet the friend I was travelling with only sees herself as Canadian. She completely rejects her country of birth as a means of identification. I have also met Aussies who find it weird that I would support England over Australia in things such as the ashes.
Ho hum.
As for this player, she's a Briton and been here since her teens so I would just see her as a Brit.

"the question of identity is such an interesting/confusing one for those of us who have lived in many places."
Not for me. I'm comfortable with my ethicity, nationality and cultural hinterland. It's settled and established. I enjoy and rejoice in the culture of other countries that I have lived in but remain who I am.
Vive la difference.

Not merely in how we may see ourselves but in how others may see us. And not ethnicity but "where you're from". And also that the same circumstances may lead to completely differing senses of identity depending on the person.
I remember when I was at uni and people would ask me where I was from. I would respond "Birmingham" without hesitation.
Now it seems odd saying that given I have lived more years outside of Birmingham than in it. I find it easier to say "I was born in Birmingham /the UK"

It depends who's asking too. My ethnicity wouldn't necessarily be obvious nor would it mean much to some.

Bit like Bloo on this one: I've lived away for years but I'm English; not Scottish, or Welsh, or Irish. Just English. In fact I could go further - I'm a Londoner.

That's nice for you. It appears that Konta, who is British, thinks that she's British. So it's an odd question, and a very offensive way of asking it.
My cultural hinterland is upper middle class academic European. I've more in common with others in my class than I do with English, French or American peasants.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe themselves as "upper middle class.'

Only those over £ 150k. It would be interesting to see how many of the lefty turds are on £ 149,999.99 p.a.
Almost all of 'em, I'm guessing.

I wonder to what extent the loathsome lefties will be able to hide behind their tax efficient non-productive companies? Will the BBC claim that payments made to these companies isn't "salary"?
