Who decides that somebody is "overpaid"?

That's a hell of a lot of households being taxed to pay those wages!
And for what exactly?

The only ethical choice is to close down the BBC.

Mids is correct. It's time to tear down the right-wing reactionary establishment BBC and replace it with a proper, communitarian service.

Me for one. I'm sure there are others. But if somebody is happy to pay that amount how can they be "overpaid"? There is no fixed, universally agreed payrate.

The BBC don't really operate in "the market", being massively, massively subsidised.

I am very surprised that this list of BBC earners hasn't been made public before now. Here in Ontario anybody who is paid with taxpayers money and earns over $100,000 by law has to be included on a list that is published once a year. It's been nicknamed 'The Sunshine List'. Every year there's the usual outcry about how much those folks earn, but you just have to compare them with salaries that are paid in the private sector to see that the amounts are not out of line. All my kids earn well over $100,000 per year but they work for private companies and if they moved to the public sector would expect similar salaries.
I guess the ire is down to the fact it's taxpayers money and that UK citizens have no choice and have to buy a tv licence. CBC is funded via taxpayers but they also get a good chunk of money from adverts. There is no tv licence here and if you want to watch advert free tv there are options such as TVO, funded by Ontario taxpayers and corporations, or PBS funded by donations from the public, corporations and wealthy US citizens.

That someone is the licence payer, that's me and everyone else who pays, and I'm not happy with it. If these twonks are getting this amount, how much are the Directors getting?

Of course, technically the license fee isn't a tax, so this isn't technically taxpayers' money. It's only semantics, of course, but it would be one way to explain the lack of transparency.

Interesting solution from Labour which I'm pretty sympathetic to. But the fact that a lot of names are missing from the list tells us that this also won't work, and Sunshine List type stuff doesn't work either. Because all the BBC's biggest earners own production companies (or, at the very least, work for production companies) that sell programs to the Beeb, so you don't actually get salaries directly from Auntie herself. It actually makes things less transparent.

Amusing to hear some kunt on the radio this evening who's drawn the conclusion not that meeja folk are horribly over-paid but that, as Linker is on 800k and that silly cow who set fire to her daughter is the best-paid female at 400k then this illustrates a gross gender imbalance.
They'll both be on 800k next year.
