That video from Utah of a nurse being manhandled and arrested by a cop is like a seminar on the problem of police violence. Why?

She did nothing wrong. She refused to draw blood from an unconscious patient who hadn’t been arrested and there was no warrant. And refused politely.

It had nothing to do with racism. She’s white.

The moment when he snaps is clear.

He says, “We’re done,” and goes berserk. In other words, he felt she was defying him. Not his request, him personally. But the key is: as a cop, he as a unique legal right to react with force.

In a way, the problem is cops are just human, too, but with that licence to sometimes let it out. And yet I think it’s necessary to grant some people that power, though it’ll almost inevitably be abused.

I also think Black lives matter, full stop. And there are racists among cops. But racism isn’t illegal, racist behaviour is. And it flies too easily under the cover of that permission.

What’s the solution? Not to trust cops and let them do their job. It’s to distrust them and watch them like hawks, for everyone’s good, including theirs.

I hope we see more of these kinds of videos showing cops abusing their legal right to use force. Perhaps it's the only way to stop it. We had a case recently where a street person was being arrested very roughly downtown Toronto. Several people were filming it and the cop in charge didn't like it because the cops were using excessive force. He asked 2 cops to get them out of his face, they were at least 15 to 20 meters away. The 2 cops told one of the guys filming it that they could confiscate his phone and if he got any nearer to the scene he could get AIDS as the street person was spitting at the cops. The guy filming knew his rights and kept filming. I wondered if he was targeted as there were several white people also filming it who weren't spoken to by the cops. That's an example of racism by the way. There is no law here that says you can't film cops on a public street. The guy filming it made a formal complaint with his video as evidence and the cops were disciplined so I hope they will think twice about intimidating members of the public and using excessive force when making arrests. Okay I understand that in certain situations they may have to use force, particularly if they suspect a weapon is present, but in this case there wasn't.

We had a fantastic bourbon pecan pie for thanksgiving. Even better, because we had it in the UK, I could serve it with cream that actually held its shape after whipping with more bourbon; and I could have leftovers with clotted cream. Pecan pie with clotted cream is The Best.

sounds good, it is a shame the milk in the USA is tightly regulated, I don't see the mass suffering from milk in UK that the regulations are supposed to protect us from, another failed government program

It's one of the few things I genuinely miss from Britain. I don't ever recall seeing really good thick cream in France either, now I think about it.

It's difficult to find unless you know a small producer, which I do. But not clotted cream, just thickish and not the usual sour creme fraîche.

But once you can find a thick, fresh (not fraiche) cream that's not been heavily pasteurised or homogenised, you can make clotted cream just by leaving it in a Le Creuset on the stove on a very, very low heat for a few hours, and skimming the clotted, concentrated stuff off the top and leaving the watery waste behind. It's time consuming, but possible and not particularly challenging.

How odd. I don't think I've ever seen any black people in Palm Springs. It is a crappy golf course, mind you, so anything they can do to improve it will be welcome. The best thing they could do - with all the courses in Palm Springs - is remove all the water on the courses and tear out all the vegetation between the fairways. Palm Springs golf looks too much like humid south-eastern US golf, and as a result looks stupid and out of tune with its surroundings, and wastes water.

As for the trees - they're not removing them because they were planted by racists. They're removing them because they obstruct the views. And one of the great things about Palm Springs is the fantastic views of the San Jacinto mountains looming 12000 feet over a town that's at - or even below - sea level.
