Of course the police don't have a duty to throw themselves in the way of bullets, any more than the underpaid "armed guards" that NRA-nuts want guarding every public and semi-public space in the US would be expected to die protecting people in a shootout. Knew you wouldn't understand it. Doesn't matter if it's one cop facing a hail of bullets or 50 cops being threatened by one person with a stick, they do not have to protect citizens. Ever watch a cop show where they try to convince the witness to a crime to testify by assuring them they will be under 24 hour police protection? They're lying. I think this is saying cops don’t have to submit to certain death. Are you saying that they should be required to throw themselves in front of bullets?

Probably not but it would be good if they'd get past patrolling Twitter occasionally.

if the cops are not going to go into harm's way then the only protection for the kids would be the teachers being armed as they are already in harm's way, or just simply write off the kids and teachers

if the cops are not going to go into harm's way then the only protection for the kids would be to have meaningful gun reform, or just simply write off the kids and teachers.
there, fixed it for you.

"The police are not obligated by the constitution to protect citizens."
Two things here:
The constitution can't cover everything. The opposite argument could just as well be made - that if something is not expressly prohibited in the constitution then that means it's okay to legislate about.
The other thing is I suspect this ruling was simply so people can't sue the police for not protecting them anytime they are the victim of violence. If that's the case then it makes more sense.

Interesting. Cop haters defending cops right not to help victims.

Who here is a cop hater? I've not seen anyone on here who's particularly cop-hatey.

Interesting. Cop haters defending cops right not to help victims. 1)Who is a cop hater? 2) Do you think cops should be able to choose to avoid being riddled with bullets?

odd comment from the only one leveling criticism towards police. Still, Rick.

I'd imagine most cops retain a bit of intelligence along with a strong self-preservatory instinct while still having the right to risk their lives in the furtherance of duty if they wish, Can't really see what the philosophy is behind this discussion.

You defend cops just standing around and watching innocent people being slaughtered?

"odd comment from the only one leveling criticism towards police"
What criticism? I posted an article about police being not legally obligated to protect anyone, meaning the people in the US are defenseless against criminals. Point out where I criticized them or shut up. Or take it up with the articles author.

But what about the anti-gun lobby funding their Representatives, the guys who're all primed to make a fortune from not selling guns to idiots? Think on, brother!

Well what do you know - first month of a school year with no school shootings in the US since 2002.
All it took was a pandemic and the closing down of all schools.

The trail of the gunman just wrapped up, guilty on 17 counts of murder, life sentence for each with no chance of parole, jury did not recommend the death sentence though. Though I think this was more sentencing hearing as he plead guilty last year. www.bbc.com/news/live/world-us-canada-63205722

It is not warranted in this case - his brain was malformed in the womb - just look at him, for God's sake

horrific as these cases are, the death penalty is never warranted. Some people are so innately rotten that they should never have been born - people like Poo-tin (the Tin Man)
