The celibacy thing is also a product of simple business management. It used to be fine for priests to be married (and is becoming more common again now) but the church didn't want to have to pay a married man's wage or to support preists' families. There's no religious reason for it but they dressed up some nonsense about Peter and/or Paul having been bachelors to justify it.

Where the Catholic Church struggles to retain priests or a presence, they are happy enough to let them marry. Converts are also allowed to keep the missus.

I believe that in the medieval period priests were often married - I seem to remember that the village parson in The Canterbury Tales was married.

In Soviet Block countries, there was a deal done so Catholicism would survive the problems of an atheistic government. Also, in places like Brasil they're letting them get some. Big market. Can't afford to have them going Evangelist.

a) Why would that lead to them f**k**g kids and not each other?
b) Nuns are celibate yet you don’t hear loads of stories of nuns f**k**g kids.

Nuns are evil in other ways, sadistic b!tches for the most part. Many stories of their extreme cruelty

Going by the Irish reports nuns appear to be far more cruel than their male counterparts. Hell hath no fury etc. I knew one years ago (not in the biblical sense) who cared for psychiatric patients, a really sweet bird, but she ended up like her charges.

I don't think celibacy is the driver. The problem seems to be that being in the church gives you a position of power, and the church covers up crimes, so people who're inclined to that sort of thing are probably attracted to the job.

The same way that violent authoritarian shitheads are attracted to being policemen, and gun-nut violent authoritarian shitheads are attracted to being policemen in the US.

I think the celibacy thing is probably a post-facto justification.

What about other churches that don't have celibacy and don't seem to be similarly afflicted? Or maybe they are.
