I think it's about the power of the institution. The mormon church is super powerful among its congregants. So is the catholic church. These days the Anglican church is pretty weak beer and powerless so it has less capacity to cover up its crimes and coerce behaviour from the victims.

I guess it's possible that Andrew isn't actually a nonce. That lass was obviously exploited but it also looks like she was dazzled by the company and the attention. The photos look like any posed snap a party. It's not like he's got his hand on her arse. There's blood in the water, shedloads of money at stake and only the civil standard of proof required. |

An instance of a female abuser does not contradict my point. In fact considering the discussion was of the role of celibacy in creating paedophiles this article is completely hopeless as she just as 13 at the time of the alleged crime (and so not a nun - it’s not even clear she was religious.) Your “women (or rather girls) do it too!” attempt is noted though. |

Nobody said it does not exist. But the issue with Catholic Church is of male priests sexually abusing kids. And that’s the only relevant comment considering the question was whether celibacy causes paedophila.
And even in society more generally, it’s men that are ramping up those sexual assault figures.

Its an old tactic, shifting the focus by saying 'look women do it too' when its one case among millions, the idiot does this with every trivial story about racist graffiti, trying to make it appear its just as prevalent when the odd black person does it, than when the actual racists do it wholesale.

Rational, reasonable, far less likely to abuse children, not easily taken in by bullshit fairy tales meaning they are less likely to believe other bullshit such as the world being flat or covid is a conspiracy to change the country into USSR. The list is a long one.

I go back to what I said at the top of this page. Atheists - per their atheism - don't have powerful organisations willing to cover up for them, and don't have coercive power from over their atheist congregation.
So when there are atheists who wish to be abusive (and there's no reason to believe that they are inherently fewer than among the god-botherers) they have to control their urges, or get caught, or join other organisations that are powerful enough to hide their mis-deeds. But even the house of commons, or the headteacher job in schools, or first secretary of the socialist workers party of great britain, doesn't quite have the same leverage and power to conceal. Having control over how someone thinks they are going into their afterlife, and also having the power to threaten the existential faith of someone's family who are all of the same church, is an immense power.
