I remember getting very bruised by a bunch of Northern punks at one of the Buzzcocks many reunions, in Manchester in about 1990. One of the better gigs I ever went to.

Punk was the Brexit of the music world, no?

Maybe. Both Peoples' Movements although punk quite quickly got taken over by commercial interests and then mostly disappeared. It did open the door for "new wave" though.

I rather got the impression that The Buzzcocks were regarded as "what punk actually was" rather than the posturing art college fancy dress party that it became.

Story coming up: at the time of the Sex Pistols (liked them - they made me laugh) we were on the road with the gypsies, actually hop-picking in Kent, and used to gather in a great pub called The Vine. One night a bunch of punks came in, made a nuisance of themselves, and ended up kicking sh*t out of a gypsy boy in a nearby car-park. Huge, huge mistake. That really made me laugh.

I'm not sure they were really punk although that's probably a bit angels on the head of a pin-ish. They were certainly punk-ish. They were too talented for proper punk for one thing. Dunno.

It's difficult to think of a definitive punk band.
Siouxie and the Banshees perhaps. Seems odd, but on balance, they're about the best fit of the commercial bands.

And they were proto-Goths really.

Yeah I struggle a bit with it. There were a small number of punk bands then a huge explosion of new wave bands who sounded quite punky but were they really punk? Early Stranglers seemed really punk but then they were a bit older and a slightly established pub rock band before punk.

UK Subs. Maybe that's a better fit.

Our dog chewed up a Dead Kennedys 45. Picked it out of a whole rack. Just the one.
