I was born in 1950 so my teenage years were right through the sixties - with all the great rock and blues bands...and I loved them - Pink Floyd gigs and all.
But by about 1974/5 things were getting pretty grim wot with Emerson Lake and Palmer etc. So the Punk movement was absolutely necessary. The only down side was that they did blow away some really good pub bands. The movement didn't last long and never affected Disco which was very strong throughout period. But, as I said, although I never bought a Punk record in my life, bands like the Clash were vital.

Never got into punk but I always considered the Ramones to be the prototypical punk band.
Rock music may have tapered off around that time WKC, but there was still lots of good stuff throughout the 70s. (I was born about a decade after you.) I always felt the 80s is when it really started going crappy overall.
If I had to choose one year as the best musically it would be 1967.

Not much decent music after about ‘69
No wonder sixties music is still the staple diet offered by radio stations, re-issued cd’s, retro records etc

Sure there was.
But even my kids (in their teens now) are starting to agree that they don't make music like they used to. Everyone today is trying to sound like someone else, no originality, it's all regurgitated pap.

but its always been like that, its why so many rock bands referenced the likes of Chuck Berry and Waters and even Jonson, we hear the past and build on it, ffs the Beatles introduced aspects from symphonic music.
When ever I hear any one say 'music was better in my day' its quickly followed by "WHARK WHARK OLD MAN ALERT WHARK WHARK".

But that wasn't "my day" and yes they built upon what came before but creativity was involved.
Most music I hear today is all based on vocal styles that sound very similar with very little instrumental skills evident.

And Bands like Spanex Ballet, who sing songs with just a couple of words?

yeah, but there was a lot of crap in the 60.s 70's and 80's, I doubt there are any tribute bands of the Parson Family or the Dooby Brothers and so on.

I grew up in the late 70's early 80's and that's exactly what my dad said about the stuff from then. I'm sure when our kids get to our age they'll say the same about what ever their kids are playing

Music science experts have proved with careful experimentation that music isn't as good as it used to be. You can't argue with science. It's always depressing when you watch those X Factor type programmes and see what impresses the audience most. It's almost always some dreary ballad sung by an over-melismatic teenager. Ask yourself this, what's your favourite Christmas song and when was it written? Was it the last 10 years? No it wasn't.

“So here it is merry Christmas, everybody’s having fun,
Look to the future it’s only just begun”
Probably the newest and best of current Christmassy songs

Melismatic. Brilliant. Never heard the word before but it does describe a lot of the shite proliferated on the X factor and suchlike.

Melismatic. Even my spell-check kicks it out. But fuck me yeah, Whitney Houston and all that shite. Thanks mids. I can bandy that one around a bit and sound as if I know what I'm talking about for once.

How the hell is this on the BBC's website? I vaguely know who he is, because I live in the US. But seriously - nobody in Britain should have the faintest idea. "A bit part (and not very good) comedian on a US comedy sketch show made some comments about suicide on social media." I think he's only ever appeared on Saturday Night Live, so he'll have never been seen in the UK ever, except perhaps as the one-time boyfriend of a semi-famous teen popstar. It's really weird that the Beeb has this on its front page.

I think the BBC News website is run by the interns at the weekend. They just harvest any old crap off the web and post it up to make it look like the department's on the job. I'm sure they've got one or two grown-ups on call but basically there's a skeleton crew and nobody on the bridge.

They might just as well just re-direct their URL to The Observer and have done with it.
