How the hell is this on the BBC's website? I vaguely know who he is, because I live in the US. But seriously - nobody in Britain should have the faintest idea. "A bit part (and not very good) comedian on a US comedy sketch show made some comments about suicide on social media." I think he's only ever appeared on Saturday Night Live, so he'll have never been seen in the UK ever, except perhaps as the one-time boyfriend of a semi-famous teen popstar. It's really weird that the Beeb has this on its front page. Not that unusual. He’s Grande’s ex. The Beeb isn’t just for old folk so loads of younger British people will have heard of him off the back of his ex.

"New York City police told Radio 1 Newsbeat that Pete, who has borderline personality disorder, is safe."
Does that mean he almost, but not quite, has a personality? Or that he has a personality but only just?

And I’m not even that up to date with modern cultural references but even I’ve heard of him, largely because Ariane Grande is pretty famous and he dated her for a bit.

"Pete, who has borderline personality disorder"
In plain English, Pete's a bit of a dick.

And yet he got to sleep with Ariana Grande.
'Tis a strange world, replete with swings and roundabouts.

Maybe she drove him to it with her general hotness.

I actually have no idea if Ariana Grande is hot. I don't think I've ever registered seeing a picture of her, and couldn't name a single one of her songs.
I still claim that "Ex-boyfriend of slightly famous singer didn't commit suicide" doesn't seem like much of a story.

Seems like she was slumming when she was dating Pete but found her senses and dumped him. But yeah it’s not really a story to you cos you’re unfamiliar with him But I think that’s probably because you’re not the demographic the story is aimed at.

Well no, I'm familiar with him because I've seen him (being generally not very good) on SNL. I don't understand why any Brits would be familiar with him.

(And of course the Beeb doesn’t restrict it’s output to just people all Britons will know. It has a fairly international audience and pop culture is pop culture.)

I think the important point is though. For much of the demographic familiar with him it will primarily be as a result of him having been Ariane Grande’s ex-fiancée and she is very famous. Especially with a younger demographic.

I wonder sometimes about these odd-couple mismatches. It occurs to me that the "partners" are unkikely to move in the same circles and, given their hectic professional lives, seem destined not be in the same place often.
Dunno. Is it PR puff? Borrowed "bad boy" streetcred for the girl and "helluva player" kudos for the bloke? It could be that these people are highly-strung and/or simply unpleasant but need to be seen to be normal Joes like the rest of us. If course, showbiz has plenty of examples of girls making out that they're red-blooded and love a nice length of cock. And plenty of blokes making out that they don't.

Odd couple mismatch.
Well, they don’t actually live in the “real” world do they?
They live in some kind of fantasy world, where anything goes, provided they get publicity.

I thought this thread was supposed to be about lesser-known dead people.
Not so much about people who are a tad on the "not dead" side; if I wanted a celebrity wankfest, I'd watch television.

Sister Wendy Beckett. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_BeckettFunny old way to spend your life but each to his/her own. Seemed a decent sort. "I believe in loyalty. We should respect our church, but never believe that the church has the last word. The church is saying 'this', but I believe that sooner or later 'this' will change. 'This' is not the mind of our Lord. God is all love. It's a delicate balancing thing. The Church has changed its position over the years, and because the spirit is with the Church, in the end the Church will always get it right. But in the end. The spirit of the Church is the meaning of love, which hasn't yet, perhaps, been fully understood."

Seems a good enough sort. Saw her a few times on the box years back. But the way they all bandy around the word 'love' always bemuses me - it's like the ultimate cop-out.
