I'm sure I remember him being one of those suave, amusing types.

That's a shame. Big influence but less of a name. WKCs probably seen him numerous times.

Sad. I saw him several times at the Ricky Tic in Windsor. John Mayall's Blues Breakers. First with Eric Clapton and then with Peter Green and lastly Mick Taylor.
A very nice bloke and great band leader.

John Mayall was renowned in the UK blues community not just for his skill but also in coaching, mentoring and bringing on the next generation. Testament to his greatness also is the influence he had on others and the panoply of talent that wanted to perform with him. Yes, we know about Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor et al, but also Alexis Korner, Andy Fraser, Billy Gibbons, Jeff Healey, John Hiseman, John Lee Hooker, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Peter Green, Steve Miller and Walter Trout (to name but a few).
Good inning, 90, but still he'll be missed.
RIP, sir.

He worked with loads of great people - and was clearly an incredible talent spotter, particularly in the mid-60s. The funny thing seemed to be that it was all about the band. I bought a couple of albums from the 60s when I was young and his voice was very standard English white-boy-blues. Nobody would choose to go hear him sing. And I don't think I ever registered his guitar playing. It can't have been bad, but you always heard his other guitarists.

Ah! What a shame. Always enjoyed watching him bat. I knew he got a nasty illness (ironically just after taking a job coaching Afghanistan, but he probably never went anywhere near Afghanistan to trigger it).

Well, doesn't he sound like a complete charmer. A guy who ran an arsehole of a company and then lied about its balance sheet to sell it to HP. And bought a yacht - having been on luxury yachts I'm pretty sure luxury yachts are purely for wankers. You can have a billion quid and not be a yacht owning wanker. It is possible.

The vessel was registered in the Isle of Man - the tax-saving, money-saving Isle of Man. When things are cheap (or cheapened) then it can be dangerous. This vessel (The Bayesian) perhaps, Grenfell Tower, the Space Shuttle, Union Carbide ... lessons learned no doubt.

I very much doubt anything about this boat was done on the cheap apart from the legal side of things like using it as a tax write off somehow.
