A smart move not appointing Lee, he obviously didn't want to put a thumb on the scale for the upcoming primary and by picking somone who's not running he's avoided been seen as meddling in the election.

Obviously team stupid were never gonna be happy with who ever he appointed, you just know they had attacks and smears lined up for who ever he appointed.

Why would he need to. He said he's appoint a black woman and he has. He's appointed someone who's not part of the crowd jostling for the elected role, which I think is good. He's appointed someone who's spent a lot of time working in California politics and was also regent of University of California, so it's not like he's appointing an outsider which is one of the made up criticisms. It's a coincidence, I think, that she's a lesbian, but also a good one - she's appointed to replace Diane Feinstein, and it sort of continues what Feinstein did as mayor of San Francisco when she got the gig after the Harvey Milk shooting, making sure that she kept appointing diverse candidates into roles that became open.

And Emily's List mostly does very good work.

I hope Butler doesn't run for the full term, but I think this is a good pick.

It's all over far right media, they've lost their collective gord over this appointment, though it wouldn't have mattered who ge appointed they would have had the outrage primed and ready to go for who ever he appointed, thry aren't rational thinkers, relying mostly on hate grievance and anger.

Why is it “common sense”?

Why is it not a case of “the best person for the job” which is always the response to explain the disproportionate number of white men in positions of influence?

I think it's clear that Rick believes that anyone who is not a straight white man can't be the best person for the job, and each time one of those characteristics is changed it makes the person ever more obviously appointed because of those characteristics. He clearly thinks that in the 40-50 million people who could be considered Californians, there isn't a single lesbian who is capable of doing the job of senator.
