Who was it one here that once complained of having gone down on a fizzy barmaid and compared it to liking a tractor battery? Great line.

Yeah, but they have a different mentality. When you live somewhere that the land's packed full of things that want to kill you, going into an ocean full of things that want to kill you won't seem such a big step.
A friend of mine was surfing last week and was stung by a stingray. He just shrugged it off, rather than admitting that the ocean is a dangerous and terrifying place.

Was in Cornwall a couple of weeks ago and the beach just east of Pendeen Light was absolutely inundated with Portuguese Man 'o War jellyfish.
OK, so they won't exactly snack on yer legs, but they can have a nasty sting apparently. The locals weren't fazed at all, btw, as they are reasonably common this time of year (or so they say).

I'm imagining one sidling up to you when you're in "the barrel" and casually flicking its tail at your face.

I was canoeing recently near a pod of killer Wales, very glad they were not breaching, but still an amazing sight.

I would be worried if I was sunbathing, they might have misttaken my pale flabby body for a seal.

They'd probably go, "Eugh! Yorkshireman!" and spit you out.
