love the downhill part of the tour. they really fly. keep expecting a cyclist to fly over the edge like wile e coyote goes flying over the edge of a cliff in the road runner cartoons.

Terrifying but very funny at the same time. Looks like he came away from it okay. I couldn't see what causes it - did he clip a kerb or did he just realise he wouldn't make the corner?

bah! i missed the final stage of the tour. You didn't yet. The final stage is always relatively late, French time. They've only just started rolling (and nothing interesting will happen for a while).

Also through the trees so lots of shade then bright light that makes it hard to pick your line. he just missed his. just down the road is the monument to Fabio casartelli who came off and killed himself. it's quite spooky and quite scary.

It's difficult to get an impression of the slope unless you're standing there I guess. That lad that came off on the scree looks like he's really struggling, as does the bloke that comes to help. And yet that slope looks like fuckall.

Walking on anything in proper bike shoes* is a pain in the arse. I imagine walking up a scree slope in them is an absolute nightmare, even if you aren't stunned from falling off the edge of a mountain.
* This is why I ride in mountain bike shoes even on my road bike, despite the derision that I get from people like Ming

I have to wonder about why you need special shoes for either TBH.

Efficient transfer of power between feet and pedals. It makes a difference. Even to someone as unfit and slow as me.

Recessed cleats make such a difference. I'd rather not walk around like a twat and avoid falling arse over tit any time I hit a semi slick surface like getting on the ferry or going for a coffee. Even if it means getting laughed at by the "serious" riders.

Yep. You're all recessed cleats.
I was in one of the village pubs on Friday (1.5 pints) and a group of middle-aged cyclist came in. Boy oh boy were they full of themselves and their bike worship. I helpfully suggested that they wouldn't be served where they were sat as we had asked and made our arrangements with the landlady and one of them actually said "ah yes but we are ace cyclists". I know he was just trying to be funny but, as they had just spent the last couple of minutes ragging one of their number for looking lovingly at his bike - which he was - it all came across a bit lower sixth.
These are strange times. I finished my pint, cancelled the second with good grace and was rewarded with a free half from the landlady for being a decent bloke (and bringing some glasses in as they were obviously overrun). She's no fool, that lass.
