Kin 'ell Twenty-one runners have died after extreme weather struck a long-distance race in north-western China. High winds and freezing rain hit participants in the 100km (60-mile) ultramarathon in the Yellow River Stone Forest, a tourist site in Gansu province, on Saturday. The race was halted when some of the 172 runners went missing, and a rescue operation was launched. Many of the stranded runners reportedly suffered from hypothermia. Officials said 151 runners were now confirmed safe, and that eight of them were injured. www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-57216601That’s awful!

Given how many utter obsessives do these ultra events, you can bet a fair few had to be physically stopped from carrying on. Yeah. I know a bunch of ultra-runners and ultra-distance athletes. They get into a weird place when competing and it’s hard to drag many of them off the course even if they are clearly not up to finishing. But it’s oddly the ones who are first timers who are most likely to try and push through. The people I know who’ve done many 100 mile runs are the ones most likely to come back and say “Yeah, I wasn’t feeling it yesterday and I dropped out after 30 miles”. I think because they know their limits and how their body reacts better. This seems like a different thing altogether. This seems to have required the mountain climber awareness that you turn back before the summit because the conditions don’t allow it, rather than the ultra-runner thing of the body not allowing it.

I normally find golf pretty dull to watch but actually really enjoyed that yesterday. Very impressive stuff from Mickelson. The course looked miserably difficult to play. I actually played the adjacent course on Kiawah a few weeks ago which was a whole lot of fun, but having seen the coverage yesterday I have no desire to pay more than twice as much to play the Ocean Course.

Looking forward to NOT watching Wimbledon as I can now go outside to meet friends and family to complain about how boring Wimbledon is to watch.

Has to be said the first half of today's final has been streets ahead in terms of watchabikity and quality than the entire 120 mins of the Manu and VR game on weds. Chelski winning.

How can "very good" and "excellent" appear in the same sentence as "the Guardian"? It's against the laws of physics.

I'm all in favour of booing. If you don't like it let rip. It's not holy communion. It's not sacrosanct.

I think it might be the left's version of that. It would explain their outrage.

No voice - you and andy and probably van are wrong.
It is perfectly possible to think that the American police's treatment of Black people is utterly appalling but not agree with the stated policies of the political movement known as BLM. It is possible to disagree with the English Football Team 'Taking The Knee' and not be a RACIST!!!!!!!
It is possible to dislike everything about racists and racism and still find "Taking The Knee" vacuous nonsense.
But it is impossible for the Left to grasp this concept.

You might think it's vacuous, but that's not the same as actively opposing it and booing it.
It's - as the cartoon notes - a peaceful anti-racist gesture. At worst it is harmless nonsense.
Why would you boo rather than just ignore it?

They should have stuck with Kick it Out. As far as I know, a worthy, non-political campaign without weird and creepy aims.

yeah...ok andy I take your point.
Let's get the entire stadium to ignore it. That would work.

They also need a different gesture to distinguish themselves from the racist blm. They could stand on their hands for 30 seconds.
