Naturally, I am disgusted by the amount of weapons available in the US. Still more by the readiness to threaten their use. The problem is that the US situation IRO weapons is so ridiculously out of whack that it's hard to rationalise this sort of thing through our eyes.
I don't know what the fix is but I'm pretty sure it's going to get worse before it gets better.

For once I agree with you. Imagining an APC or MRAP or whatever that is at my daughter's school, is frankly absurd.
Also, I wonder what the qualified drivers of it do when they don't need it? Security officers I suppose (possibly the most boring job ever), or PE teachers! For some reason I imagine PE teachers would love to jump in a military vehicle and - err - well just drive it around really.

A lefty counsellor (they all are) is far, far, far more dangerous than a tank. Yes who needs to help children with mental health issues caused by a disorganised home life. A tank is far better.

If, hypothetically, there was a situation that needed a tank in an LA school, I'm sure the LAPD (until we take their tanks), National Guard or Army could supply them. I'm pretty sure the LA School District Police don't need their own tanks and grenade launchers.
Of course, once again, it's utterly absurd that LA Schools have a police force at all.

All LA schools are like Clueless and Mean Girls. Neither of which I've seen, of course...

these things are not tanks, no matter how many times you call them a tank, they are APC's, which are armored buses, in this case they cost the LAPD very little, they were not bought new, they were surplused by the Army, the choice was to melt them down or allow police to use them, police use them very little, which make them perfect for them, all they do is allow police to travel into hostel place without getting gunned down,

You don't need any training to drive them. They're almost always automatic and have power steering. I've driven lots of them, but I used to build them for a living. images.app.goo.gl/WmriXH4iTh5NMML57

these things were all but given to these police departments, if you are a LAPD, NYPD, or any major city PD you would be crazy not to take one, not something you would use every day, or maybe every year, but nice to have, just in case

Makes you wonder what they have to hide...

They are not being forced to leave, they are just tired of the worry of being targeting by ambushers, having every decision examined in court, other jobs are looking good to them, of course the ones who cannot get any other job anywhere will hold on,

I've driven lots of them, but I used to build them for a living. Sounds like a pretty cool job, but I love vehicles in general so no surprise there. It occurred to me that given these things aren't going to be used much, there could be a mechanics class where the kids get to maintain it.

10 Florida SWAT officers quit unit over ‘political climate’: report www.foxnews.com/us/10-florida-swat-officers-quit-unit-over-political-climate-reportTen members of a police SWAT team in a South Florida city quit the unit this week, concerned about “today’s political climate” and its impact on their jobs, according to a report. In a letter dated Tuesday, the officers in Hallandale Beach, Broward County, complained of being “minimally equipped, under trained and often times restrained” in performing their duties, Miami FOX station WSVN-TV reported. The officers – who were leaving the SWAT unit but not resigning from the force -- wrote that they were concerned that city officials were “placing the safety of dogs over the safety of team members.” looks like swat is going to be made up with 2nd's

I'm still not sure why schools should have these tanks (or, you know, IED-resistant super-expensive, inefficient buses) even if they're basically given away.
Firstly, they've only given away because the military gets sh*t tons of cash to buy new ones they don't need. Secondly, if the tool you have is a tank, every problem looks like one that can be solved with a tank. Thirdly, if the environment you get educated in is one where they think you need tanks to survive school, you're quite likely to emerge pretty f**k*d up.

Can anyone think of a situation where it'd be useful at a school?
I understand I'm looking at this from a UK perspective, so maybe simply can't see it.
IED resistant? If I wanted to set off an IED at a school, I'd put it in a classroom or cloakroom. Can't see the military vehicle being much use.
Also, how much do they cost to build? The school might get them cheap but only because the armed forces are getting funded for new stuff.
