some of the most brilliant scientists in history had a belief in a divine being. And that may have made sense in the context of their era.

If we actually learn history from statues, it appears that everyone was green with leached copper and was covered in birdshit in the past

I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away

We shouldn’t preserve absolutely everything no matter how trashy and crappy and offensive it is. Are you a hoarder?

I was born into a non practicing Christian family. But had all the cultural upbringing of Christianity at school. Christened and confirmation at thirteen. RE classes etc.; and I became a choir boy at my local church - which I loved. But I just lost my faith over the years. It was difficult as I remember how much solace I got from it when upset at Boarding school. But I simply could not believe in Christianity. Or any other religion. And finally "came out" as a fully paid up atheist in my mid twenties. But I don't knock people who still have faith. On the question of morality I would suggest to anyone who is really interested to consider: Euthyphro’s Dilemma. It’s interesting to me because I was born and raised without faith so never felt I “lost” it. Never attended church, never baptised. We did get presents at Christmas as kids but I think that was more the cultural tradition of the U.K. than anything else. We never had decorations either. Now a couple of my siblings, my parents, step-parents found faith later in life but I have never felt the need. That said I did / do have bibles in my book collection. And I remember having a children’s Jehovah’s Witness bible when I was younger. I liked the photos but I remember the proselytising contained in it, even now.

I'm fine with leaving the Lincoln Memorial but taking down statues of Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis that were put up in the 1960s. As far as I can tell, you want to see absolutely none of these taken down.

Bunch of jessies. "Police are "building relationships" with communities after more illegal street parties were held in London, the Metropolitan Police has said. Met Commander Bas Javid said the majority of interactions with the police at events had been "positive". It comes as officers broke up an event on Harrow Road, Kensal Town, on Friday following complaints from residents. A group then moved on to nearby Maida Vale and did not disperse until after midnight. Officers have been called to illegal street parties across London in the past month." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-53203832

I wouldn't have a problem with moving any statue, be it Lee or Grant, if it were done legally, there are many confederate cemetery's that would love to have a Lee,

How about their responsibility to the wider community rather than just the uppity fuckers criminal trash that they've lost authority over? Crack some skulls, FFS.

I like Ken Burns, nice to see a measured opinion when all we see is the idiots hysterics day in day out.

Are you concerned about the lawlessness of how the statues are coming down, or the fact that the statues are coming down?

Well, yeah. Tertiary education is overpriced in the US and should be fully taxpayer funded.
