I think I would prefer Rwanda or Somalia to Micklandia.

Good spin from the Torygraph there.
Characterising Sunak's Rwanda scheme as "beginning to work" is, at best, wishful thinking; at worst, propaganda that Goebbels himself could have written. Still, Chris Evans is the Editor who once said that, "... fake news is great for the news industry".
Way to go, Chris!

Rwanda remains an absolutely fascinating case study in western diplomacy in Africa. There are lots of elements to how it's all played out. Kagame has a whole lot of dodgy past, lots of dodgy stuff related to the end of the genocide. But he was the good guy to Blair and Clinton and that carried through to subsequent governments. Which meant that Rwanda has received way more aid and favourable trading conditions than most other African countries. On the other hand, Kagame's not particularly corrupt by African standards and has a relatively modern view of economics, so - partly on the back of UK and US aid - Rwanda's done pretty damn well compared to other similar places. But all this is dependent on continued support from London and Washington which is one reason Rwanda has agreed to the Home Office's daft scheme.
It all works because he gives the west what it wants, and the west gives him stuff and ignores his abuses. But it also works because his government is relatively modern. Fundamentally, though, it's worked pretty well.
Still don't particularly have any desire to visit.

Don't disagree with the article, but I have a couple of nits to pick: The title "The dark side to a hideous sportswashing agenda" suggests that one should be surprised that something hideous has a dark side. Rwanda is not one of the 20 poorest nations in the world, certainly not "by any measure". Perhaps bottom 40 nations, but it's halfway up the Africa table and better than every other central African country. It's f**k**g hilarious that it's picking on PSG for taking money from Rwanda yet hasn't mentioned the billions they've taken as Qatari sportswashing. Nor, I suppose, the hundreds of millions Arsenal has taken from UAE sportswashing.

Ah-hahahhhahhahaha! Begorra! "A plan to draft new Irish legislation which would redesignate the UK as a "safe country" to which asylum seekers can be returned has been approved. Irish government ministers collectively approved the plan brought to Cabinet by Justice Minister Helen McEntee. Last week she claimed more than 80% of recent asylum claims were from people who arrived in the state by crossing the border with Northern Ireland. But the British government has said it will decide who it accepts into the UK. The Irish government has recently expressed concern that the UK's plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is encouraging more refugees to come to the Republic of Ireland. Tánaiste (Irish deputy prime minister) Micheál Martin said last week that asylum seekers were seeking "sanctuary here and within the European Union as opposed to the potential of being deported to Rwanda". On Monday, Mr Martin was asked to clarify Ms McEntee's claim that 80% of asylum seekers come to the Republic of Ireland via the land border. He replied that it was not statistical and "not a data-based sort of evidence base" but he added it was very clear that "there's a change in the nature of where migrants have come from". Closing a 'loophole' The situation has been complicated by a recent Irish court ruling. In March, the High Court in Dublin ruled that Ireland's designation of the UK as a safe third country for returning asylum seekers was contrary to EU law, external, in light of the UK's controversial Rwanda policy. On Tuesday morning, Ms McEntee brought her proposal to the Irish Cabinet in a bid to close the "loophole" that has arisen as a result of the High Court judgement." www.bbc.com/news/articles/czq588jqz8loGoodness me, that's awful. What a shower o' cunts.

Amazing what sovereign nations can achieve, looks like they didn't "need to get their country back" to prove how it's done.

I see our less enlightened neighbours are demanding to decimate fish stocks. "According to French government sources, nine EU countries will meet in Brussels at the start of the week to discuss the impact of the UK’s decision to ban bottom fishing in 13 marine protected areas, a measure London says applies equally to its own fishermen and those from the EU. The UK imposed the ban on bottom fishing in 13 marine protected areas on 22 March. Under pressure from the national industrial fishing sector, France has assembled a coalition of member states to pressure the European Commission to impose sanctions on the UK for non-compliance with the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) signed in 2020 by London and Brussels." www.euractiv.com/section/agriculture-food/news/paris-leads-coalition-of-eu-states-to-demand-actions-against-uk-ban-on-bottom-fishing/
