My opinion has changed on this. It was first the Beatles. Then it was the Stones. Now it's back to the Beatles.

I was born in 1950 - so my teenage years were the sixties and then on into my twenties in the 70's.
The Beatles transformed pop - they were brilliant - from their days in Germany right through to Sargent Pepper - Abbey Road and the White Album.
But I never actually bought a Beatles album or went to any of their gigs.
I bought a great many of the Stones albums, I went to many of their gigs. I play their music my the car and when I hear Brown Sugar I want to dance.
The Beatles were intellectually and musically brilliant but when I want to Rock or when I hear the opening bars of Gimme Shelter - it's got to be The Stones.
and for Baloo - the cool and right answer is, of course, The Clash!

The Beatles were great for about 50% of their existence; the Stones have been great for probably 10% of theirs.

The correct answer is the Beatles of course.
The Stones wrote plenty of good songs (Gimme Shelter being the best imo) but had nowhere near the versatility of the Beatles. (For example, when they tried their hand at psychedelia they came up with dreck like 2000 Light Years from Home.) Like wkc said, they transformed rock music.
And George was a better guitarist than Keith.

The Stones have Charlie though. Ringo's a decent drummer but he doesn't have Charlie's groove. The Beatles didn't have the Stones' groove. And Mick Taylor's a better guitarist than John. Tumbling Dice is a better song than Yellow Submarine. The Stones win.

Marshal, when you're back here reading this, can you tell me why you chose those two bands, and not any American bands please, Ta.

The Stranglers were great. Talented pub rock turned punk.
