less of a dirgey right-wing whine than Taxman
Hardly a right-wing whine. They were getting taxed at over 90% at the time.

I'm all for rich people shouldering more taxes. But if the government needs to levy a 90%+ tax on them to "help the poor" then they are pretty incompetent.

ELO is what many people thought the Beatles would sound like in the 70s.
I remember there was a band called Klatuu back then that people thought were the Beatles undercover.

If the Beatles and the Stones where best two British Bands of that Era, what would the toss up be between for US bands?
Beach Boys vs The Doors perhaps

The Doors were good but uneven. They had a few fantastic songs but some real pap as well, like Touch Me.
Can't think of many great bands until the late 60s; CCR, CSN(Y), the Dead . . .

Apart from the Beach Boys. I don't think the US really caught up with rock until the mid to late 60s. Arguably the Beach Boys were more pop until the mid 60s anyway. Motown and Stax was the best US music until they caught up with us on the rock front, imo.

Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds were quite good. Yeah, though Neil Young is Canadian.

Joe Stumner, great guitarist. Though Johnny Mar was also brilliant, shame that maudlin tw@t Morrissey was their singer. Really nice bloke too. Shame he went so early. He came to an exhibition of Mrs Ootlg's work.

Saw Strummer a couple of times. Once at Glastonbury, which was fine. Once at the 100 Club at a fundraiser - absolutely tiny gig where he played an acoustic set with Bez dancing along. That was fantastic.

How about:
Steely Dan Vs REM
Two completely different bands. I have several albums by both. They are both fantastic and I still play their stuff all the time.

Hard given their music and when they made it were different.
I was thinking in the end who cares, what matters in the end is what you like, so often I find many go with the cool or popular stuff and it's hard to stand outside your peers, especially as a teen. At the same time I was listening to and watching punk, post punk and new wave bands in my teen years I was also going to folk clubs as I've always liked that as well. My mates really took the piss, but fcuk em, all that mattered was I enjoyed it

Loved the music too.
