Saw a map that showed where many of the Russian units massing on the border came from. A few were from as far away as Kamchatka.

Another interpretation is that the Russians were conducting military exercises with no invasion of Ukraine being imminent. The Russian parliament is asking for diplomatic recognition of the 'republics' of Luhansk and Donetsk in the Donbas region of Ukraine, though..

I doubt if Putin thinks that's a good idea.

Oh yeah, because the Russian payment is known to be diametrically opposed to Putin's will and thinking on most things.

Russia and Belarus began "Allied Resolve," their largest joint military exercises in years, and they will run until Feb. 20. Ukraine's "Blizzard-2022" military exercises commenced on the same day and will also conclude on Feb. 20.

At minimal cost, Putin has tested Biden/US resolve, Ukrainian attitude, and NATO's/Europe's unity.

Yeah, what we've seen is a clear demonstration of the bri-alliance of NATO and the moral weakness of the Hun. Even Johnnie Garlic managed to rouse himself from his filthy bed to engage, limply, with the threat from the East.
