I hate to bring physics into it .... but snow acts as a sound baffle, it absorbs sound rather than reflecting it therefore making it seem quieter than normal. However, it also reflects light to brighten an otherwise dark night. Like you said ... MAGICAL !

Bar sounds like a good idea, but I'm booze free this month so that's out. Will chill with some DVDs instead. Watching 'Munich'. Pretty bloody good actually. Booze free month? The only people who do that are alcoholics trying in vain to prove they haven't got a problem. Har har har di har har. It's a test of my willpower. Two days in and I'm doing pretty well thus far.

It's still tumbling out of the sky here, and looks incredibly beautiful - only because I know I don't have to drive anywhere tomorrow mind. It always looks so pristine out in the country, and as you say, it's that lovely silence and calmness out there that really feels enveloping.
Love it!

It's just gone midnight and we've had our first real snow of the year (about 1")
My pups - 7 months old - are going berserk in the garden, they don't understand what it is ....... but it's fun to play with - even at this time of the night ! ;D

I was watching some Chaffinch in my garden this morning. There was already a good layer of snow on the ground and I saw one of the birds lying down in it! I thought perhaps it was ill, dying, suffering from the cold ... something. Then I saw another one doing the same thing. They were sort of spread-eagled in it but when I walked towards them they flew off.
I thought it was a bit odd ... never seen any bird do that before. But maybe it was their way to clean themselves of mites ... or perhaps it felt soothing .... or it could just be that they liked the feel of it. After all, it was almost certainly the first time they'd ever experienced anything like it .. unless they were last years birds.

I know the temperatures are freezing, but standing in the falling snow and marvelling at how quiet and peaceful it is, I don't feel cold at all. And it's strange, but it's 10.45 pm and it isn't even dark. Everything around is clear and beautiful. Quite magical. It's not that cold when it's snowing because the clouds form an insulating blanket. The first clear morning after the storm lifts is when you get the coldest temperatures.

I wish it was snowing down here, this is oppressive bloody heat, it's the hottest most horrendous, humid summer we've had in Australia for years. I'm 70km, north of Sydney, last summer was a non event, we had only 3 days over 30C, so far this year, we've had 13 days of over 40C and it's just the start of February, traditionally the worst month for heat and humidity for much of Australia. The poor bastards in Adelaide have just had their 15th straight day of over 40C. Melbourne much the same, while this coming week, Sydney is to cop a week at least of 40C+ days. Yesterday it was so bloody hot (46C at 3pm, Terrigal Beach) I had to carry kids over the sand to the shoreline so that their feet will not blister! When you came out of the surf you had to go straight back in because you'd dry within minutes. I love summer but this is just wrong, it's not refreshing it's just a bloody nightmare, our AC at home is set on 21C, the entire system is ready to sh*t itself and die. It's been moaning and groaning for a week. If anyone wants to swap houses with us they're welcome to ours till March/April we've had a gutfull.

I've been to much colder and mountainous places and haven't seen 12 inches I so want to succomb to the temptation of a Brokeback Mountain reference, but I'm having a cheap childish knobgag-free month.

Well, yeah. That's what happens when a Tory is mayor. Total and utter failure of essential public services.

The buses wern't working here either, and those that did were abandoned because the drivers aren't trained on how to drive in snow and ice conditions, nowt to do with Londons Mayor up here.

I notice the buck passing has kicked off already about gritting. TfL say it's the councils' fault and the councils say no it isn't (although I reckon it is).

£15k per day in towns and cities for one gritter, £30k per day one gritter in rural areas. Could be the reason why?
All on your council bill btw.

Got to be less than the 1.2 billion estimated losses to the economy yesterday?
