But - here it is a winter wonderland, we had the foot of snow last night, and some. It's real pretty now with a blue sky, but bitterly cold. Mind, I am high up and close to the Penines.

I can't speak of other areas and their councils, but I think Powys County Council have done pretty well. We had a lot more snow last night and blizzards on the higher ground, but they seem to have managed to keep the main roads open. On the whole, in rural areas, our farmers have always taken up the strain, opening up lanes and difficult country roads with their tractors. In some countries more used to heavy snow they have extra tools at their disposal . The public too can buy chains for their car wheels, or tyres which have metal studs enbedded in them so they can grip into the snow and ice. It's all very well complaining that we're the laughing stock of the world, but what do you prefer ............ your council tax going up drastically to pay for machinary which may only be needed every 10 to 20 years ... or accept the fact that you'll have to take the occasional day off while the bad weather lasts? The decision is yours. Either pay up or shut up!

Well said Cathy! The trouble is this time we weren't prepared for the quantity of the snow or the duration. It wasn't just a quick snowfall, it's lasted days and nights. We are not used to coping in those conditions. Apparently the last time any weather conditions were comparable were 20 years ago, so it came as a bit of a shock! Our Winters are generally quite mild by comparison. In the South along the coast we have been hit pretty hard. I haven't seen snow on this scale since i was a small child. That's going back a long time. The snow has all been washed away. We had heavy snowfall earlier in the day, then sleet, then heavy rain, then sunshine which left slush! The slush has all gone now and temperatures are again dropping tonight to -6 so far. The weathermen say that more snow is on the way tomorrow evening/night and again more on Thursday, so it's not over yet. My youngest son was thrilled he had a day off school today as the schools are closed in my area. They look set to re-open tomorrow, we will see?! Keep my council tax down, that's fine by me lol! We pay enough anyway!

Too true Libby! Rising Council tax bills are already hurting hard pressed families and older people as it is. Unless someone can prove we're going to get this kind of weather on a more regular basis I would prefer we spend our money on things we urgently need now.

12 inches deep in Dinnington already and my daughter will not be able to get home, now that buses have been suspended for the rest of the day. Fortunately for her, a nice colleague has offered her a bed for the night.
South Yorks in general is snowed up today. Staff have been sent home from Rotherham General Hospital (yes you read right, "hospital"), and I'm anticipating having to use a colleague's shovel to dig my car out to get home from work later.
I think all those who have made the effort this week deserve a Certificate of Sainthood.

What worries me is what happens to the millions of tons of salt spread on our roads ? Does it all end up in the rivers and streams ? Does it kill off the fish and plantlife ?

Snowing on top of snow here, with a sky full of it. Gritters aren't out, so abandoned vehicles litter the roads. We have been out and dug out two trapped on our hill, both drivers telling horror stories.

Take that back ... It's just started dropping a few flakes but they aren't sticking. It's come further than they forecast. My grandson is here today because his school has had to close because of a burst pipe and no heating. He's quite pleased, as you can imagine, but a bit fed up with the lack of stickability. He's been watching the pics of children enjoying the snow in other parts of the country and wanting the same here.

Snowing here, I hate snow.
Don't think it'll get as bad as most places in the country, so pleased I don't drive it looks horrific.

What worries me is what happens to the millions of tons of salt spread on our roads ? Does it all end up in the rivers and streams ? Does it kill off the fish and plantlife ? It sticks to cars and corodes them, making them rust and fail government MOT's. This is all a plan by Nu Labour to get the car industry going again, they asked Russia for the weather in exchange for - anything we have left!

Good on ya, that hotel is abysmal to stop in. Did it a couple of years ago and ended up walking out after one night.
Have fun! ;D

Sounds great fun radge, lucky you! Have lots of fun!
No snow here today, although it was forecast last night and today. Heavy rain first thing, still very cold. Dry now, grey skies!
