Quite so, Scoob. A swift boot up the arse, elevates the mind.

Support of the parents? Parents are part of the problem. As soon as teacher tries to be assertive on some charming little darling mummy or even daddy gets a text message and suddenly finds enough parental concern to hippo into school threatening to sort someone out for 'messing wiv me kids, 'cos ah luv me kids, me'.
Their parents didn't get caned either. Anyone seeing a link?

There is a good reason they don't use them. If they do they are branded as being unable to control the kids,no matter how unfair that may be, and their careers are blighted forever. Heads just won't listen to a teacher who voices concern about a particular pupil for the same reasons.

The logistics of this scheme show just how out of touch these people are.
Put unruly kids from our school in solitary, and you would need about another 200 rooms, and the staff to look after them.

Is it only possible to discipline kids by caning them out of interest? Scooby We had solitary or what they called' 'sanctuary' at my school. The worst behaved girls would have to spend their entire day with the deputy head. Including going to the canteen with the deputy head and returning to solitude. It only really worked on those girls whose parents gave a f**k. Caning would not have worked as at my school I'm 100% sure that if you'd tried to cane any of the girls, they would have hit back.

Yes, I've seen the school for thugs first hand.
Caning isn't the whole solution, but it can certainly help.

Personally my definition of a thug doesn't stretch to those who hit back at somebody who is hitting them. I know full well I wouldn't have tolerated a teacher hitting me, nor would my parents and not because they're thugs or chavs. My mom doesn't like strangers hitting her kids and my dad doesn't believe in hitting kids full stop.
And both were beaten as kids before anyone thinks they hold those opinions because they were never hit.
Does it really help though. I've seen plenty a parent in Tesco lashing out a child who was annoying them ("I said f**k**g shut it" <thwack>) and I am pretty sure those kids are the future asbo generation.
I'm not against parents having the right to spank their kids should they so choose, I just don't like the knee jerk reaction that says discipline MUST involve caning/spanking and that any children who don't receive either will be badly behaved.

I never said caning is a must, just an option.

Not sure I agree with it being even an option, in schools at least.

I went to a Catholic Junior which was run by nuns. A smart slap on the leg by hand or a ruler was considered adequate punishment. I then went on to a Grammar school where the ultimate punishment was the cane, not that I ever got it, but it didn't do any of us any harm. Having worked in Junior Schools since, the current method of punishment seems to be public humiliation before suspension or being expelled. Personally I don't think this works, it's intimidating. I would never dream of hurting my child, but in all honesty, teachers have a lot on their hands. A return to the old methods would have my thumbs up.

I guess each to their own. I wouldn't allow anybody to hit my kids, irrespective of who the person was, some parents would.

Well if 'Bouncers' are the only alternative (is this really true btw). I would put my trust in Teachers.
