Select all . file. export. address book ?
No, not like that. You don't select files. It simply doesn't work that way. You're thinking that you can save a bunch of emails as text files in one go, but Outlook doesn't work with the data the way you perceive it. Outlook sees your message folders as one large file, which it organizes on screen so you can see it as the bunch of individual messages which make sense to you. If you want the contents of each email stored as a text file, you would have to copy and paste each one individually.
You can export your contacts as a text file, but if you want to transfer the entire contents of 3000 emails to another machine or outlook account, then you use the .dbx file, which is the whole lot, in a single file which only the email client understands.

well I dunno about outlook but other mail progs save the addresses in your address book without losing the mails in the old folder .I dunno how outlook works . I dont know what the folder is that youve made .It's got an awful lot of mails in it though if it's 3000 addys .

Right hang on . If I highlight all the email addresses that are in this folder , then go to file , export to address book, use text file ( comma seperated value ) this will save all those email addresses in the address book that can then be saved onto a usb stick ? Yes ? and if yes , will the addresses still be in the original folder so that I can still use them ?

This would be ideal but I cant save the .dbx file . I cant even open it drag it or right click on it

in the meantime Id settle for just having the addresses saved on a usb stick as long as the original mails are still safe in the folder in OE

Just save the addresses .What the feck you going to do with 3000 emails ? read them sometime ?

Yes I can access all the emails in the folder but only in Outlook Express. I can find where this folder lives in the comp through search but when I find it I cant do anything with it , I cant even open it never mind save the git. When I open outlook express they are all there but I cant save them from there as they wont right click to save and they wont drag anywhere else, they wont even copy and paste. Sooooooooo if this comp goes off as in its fecked, I loose all these addresses.

I know, which is why you have to import it first. As far as I can see you cannot do anything at all until that .dbx has been imported and all your messages and contacts restored. Then you go about saving your contacts and archiving the emails, the proper way.
Saying that, I still don't know why you can't move the file. All I can think is that it's been archived but even then, shouldn't be a problem.
The point is though, Outlook obviously can use it because you can view the contents in Outlook.
You need to go to File > Import > Messages and take it from there. I can't help beyond that.

yes I've understood all that and know why now I think ...hammer explained .Its cos that folder you have is an outlook database and as such only legible to outlook . I dont know what folder in outlook you've been clicking on now to get the message you did but presume it was your address book .If it was your address book you will want to IMPORT the addys to it -not export them
