Why would AF1 need a fighter escort in continental US?

took the air force an hour and a half to get two planes to protect air force one.

So, if Al Qaeda had happened to have a squadron of F-22s in US airspace at the time of 9/11, and knew the flightplans of AF1, then AF1 could have been vulnerable?

AF1 is capable of 0.92 mach and has a service ceiling of 45,000ft.

missiles can only be fired from f-22s?

point is the people on the plane were worried, so obviously it's not quite as invulnerable as the naysayers in here want to believe it is.
