"Flowers have been laid in memory of a teenager found dead in a wood. The body of 13-year-old Lucy McHugh was discovered near Southampton Sports Centre on Thursday morning. A handwritten card on one bunch of flowers read: "RIP Lucy. In our thoughts always. Love Cat and Isabelle xx". A 24-year-old man from Southampton is in custody on suspicion of murder and engaging in sexual activity with a child." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-44991967Another poor girl who, having pulled a duckface, is found raped and murdered. That is very sad and terrible for her family and friends. So, my question is this: why is it that, every time we learn of a young woman being sexually assaulted and/or murdered, there is always a photo of her looking like a mentally-challenged mallard? What does it tell us of the sexualisation, impressionabilty, gormlessness and vulnerabilty of these girls?

It doesn't tell you anything about the girl at all. She didn't choose the photo, somebody else did. Or do you think she looks the same in every photo ever taken of her?

So you're saying she asked for it cos she liked to look attractive on Facebook to her friends.

Well quite, what does it tell us?
I see a photo of a pretty face, nothing more.

I think it suggests, to the kind of criminal who rapes and kills young woman, a degree of vulnerabilty, naivety and suggestability which would be easy to exploit.

So, it's the girl's fault she got raped and murdered because she pouted a bit in a photo? It's too much for a man to see that and expect him to hold back from a bit of rapey murdery stuff.

Those characteristics I'm well aware of, being the father of a 13yo. She's in Norwich today with a bunch of friends and sure I worry. But, that photo is just a photo. It doesn't sexualize her. They are vulnerable but a guy intent on rape and murder... Honestly I don't get what difference the photo makes.

Did you catch obtuseness in Alaska? You're usually capable of processing rather more nuanced arguments than that.

I'm really struggling to work out your point, apart from the fact that you don't like girls doing duckface. And a girl's murder seems like an odd thing to hang that argument off.

It struck me that there's an unfortunate correlation there with a very troubling mentality among young women (of course, nothing like as troubling as the mentality of the sort of blokes who actually commit the crimes.)

Perhaps it's no more than an unfortunate correlation. It's certainly not their fault, but I wonder if it speaks to an unhealthy attitude in society and one which, in turn, would suggest an easily-influenced target for a monster. Put it this way, my daughter laughs out loud at other young women who do that and, of the girls she grew up with, those that do this sort of thing are utter clowns (and usually in trouble one way or another.)

It's silly teenage stuff like all silly teenagers do. Like all of them. They just want to fit in, have friends and feel included and if that includes trying to look older( like girls have done forever) and make silly faces then so be it. The subhuman scum who did this should be killed.

Hard to argue with that. I'm against the death penalty but it is difficult to hold to that principle sometimes.

We are raised to respect each other's bodies. This is taught at Key Stage 1 (Primary school) and good parents teach the same.
Not sure what you mean by an 'atmosphere'. I agree some children are sexualized way too early, either by peer pressure or via emulation of Pop idols, actors, etc...
Do you mean that in itself encourages child rapists? Maybe it does but the focus should be on stopping men raping children, not on whether they dress up a bit sexy or whatever.

Don't disagree with any of that. I'm not sure about "encourages" but I worry that it perhaps facilitates to some degree. As Mids points out, this is a teenager trying to fit in and, innocently, flagging herself up as both attractive and open to manipulation.

What does 'trouble kid' mean and how the hell can you be sure of anything from a pic and a news story which doesn't say much of the girl at all?
