A farm has cancelled its annual turkey auction after coming under fire from vegan campaigners.

Nine turkeys on St Werburgh's City Farm in Bristol were to be auctioned off to raise money for disadvantaged people in the area.

We should of course not treat livestock cruelly, but being vegetarian because you think it's mean to eat animals is silly.

I know a few vegans who are entirely chilled out and non-pious and aware that other people eat meat. I think generally that comes with age and awareness.

But I still know a handful who are militant, tiresome shits. These days, of course, living in California, I mostly come across carb-nazis and gluten-nazis rather than meat-nazis.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has criticised animal rights activists as "shameful and un-Australian" after dozens were arrested in nationwide protests.

On Monday, activists broke into abattoirs and chained themselves up to protest against the meat industry.

More than 100 protesters also blocked one of Melbourne's main intersections, before many were forcibly removed.

"We want people to think like we do and go vegan - we want people to stop supporting animal abuse," one campaigner, Kristin Leigh, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Animals are suffering in ways that most of us could never imagine. It is not about bigger cages - it is about animal liberation."
