It's the ladies' football world cup. England are playing Denmark (England one up) at the moment. Quite entertaining. Some of the Danes are pretty hot, it has to be said.

That's just a warm-up, right? I think the real Ladyball start next weekend (as does the cricket wc, too).

This gets on my tits:
United States World Cup winner Hope Solo says that the disparity in prize money at the men's and women's World Cups shows that "male chauvinism is entrenched" in Fifa.
World football's governing body says the £24m awarded to participating teams in 2019 is double the amount of 2015, but £315m was given to teams at the men's 2018 tournament.
Australia's players' union says the difference - which has increased by £21m in the past four years - amounts to "discrimination".
"Being honest, it tells me that male chauvinism is entrenched in our global federation and these disparities are a reflection of that.
"We shouldn't have to take these issues to courts and send letters to Fifa."
Nothing to do with chauvanism. have a look at the viewing figures for women's footy vs men.
get an audience worldwide of billions and you can have the same money. get an audience of 3 and you don't.

I don't understand why these ladies don't start their own independent football association then slowly build it up over a hundred years without any input from men until it's a huge worldwide sport and the top players get millions. What's their issue with doing that?

Better still, be meritocratic and train so that you can compete against the men on your own terms. Should be a piece of piss.
Then you can have all the prize money, sponsorship and salaries.

I never get why people get mad at others asking for more money. You don’t ask, you don’t get. Besides she knows the status (and this viewing figures) won’t increase with more money so it’s chicken vs. Egg.

Ming is correct on this, and Hope Solo is wrong. It's a professional sport and the men's game brings in massively more than the women's. It's not like tennis, which I imagine she'd use as the comparison because pay is equal in the grand slams, where people are normally as interested in the women as the men, and where both are needed to bring in the crowds.

If there's chauvinism as a cause, it's from spectators who are not as willing to watch womens footy yet. When they are, the players will have a case for equal pay.

I just don’t really care about her asking for more cash. If they decide to pay it to her (and they won’t) it doesn’t impact me.

It would be interesting to see her response to the “prize money linked to viewing figures” retort though.

Hope Solo. You could swap her names round and it would still be like someone's (American) name.

The day a female player can deliver a millimetre-perfect pass like Kevin de Bruyne, can defend like Virgil van Dijk, or make something from nothing like Lionel Messi, then I might watch female football.
If I wanted to watch two teams with comparatively poor spatial awareness and the ball bobbing around in the air rather than played to feet, I'd watch the Evo Stik league, thanks very much. Or maybe its female equivalent - the L'Oreal league perhaps? Because they're worth it.

Hhahaha, although that would be Maybelline. It's good point though- do manufacturers of women's stuff (Hotpoint, Dyson, Cif etc) sponsor women's sport? If not, why not?

Anyway here's a bit more sense;
Toni Duggan: ‘I believe we should be better paid, but not the same as the men’
“Should we be doing it? No. Because we don’t bring in the money that the men do – we’re not as successful as them yet. They bring in a lot more money than us commercially and are more successful. When people ask me: ‘Should I earn the same money as the men?’ No, I don’t believe I should because they’re on a bigger scale than me, they have more fans, are more popular. I believe the girls should be better paid but not the same as the men.”

But that aside this is annoying. Not because of the comment on pay (which is fairly benign and honest) but because she has juxtaposed “men” with “girls”. I hate it.
