Since we're a bunch of aging and already aged blokes here, how many of us listen and rate bands from this century, almost every time we talk about music it's from minimum 35 years ago. Rammstein. Underworld. Leftfield. That's about as modern as it gets for me. Different genre. London before I left. French stuff after 1960 doesn't do it for me.

Abbey Road, obviously. Although it would be better if they'd purged Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Octopus's Garden.

DSotM. Followed by Meddle. I think that their music suffered progressively as Roger Waters took over.

Is “Progressive”ly an “joke”?
Wish You Were Here is Number 1 for me. DSoTM is just slightly overrated.

One for the musos. Just our of interest, were there any stand-out instrumentalists* in either the Beatles or The Rolling Stones?
*players of musical instruments, as opposed to musicians. I accept that they are not mutually exclusive terms.

Mick Taylor is a genuinely brilliant guitarist. There are drum people who believe that Ringo is exceptional. Not sure George, Mick, Keef or John were particularly remarkable guitarists. Watts seems to be a good jazz drummer but that’s really not my field.

They were all very competent musicians but suffer somewhat in retrospect when compared with the technical ability that started to become a thing in rock music in the late 60s. Like Andy says, Mick Taylor is a genuinely top notch guitarist. Charlie Watts was a very good drummer and Brian Jones could apparently turn his hand to many instruments. None of them were slouches though and five of them were world class songwriters.

So, we're agreed that, instrumentally, the Beatles were a bit hackish?

I think that misses the point of The Beatles. They weren’t meant to be virtuoso instrumentalists. They were absolutely magnificent songwriters (apart from Starkey) who wrote songs that matched their instrumental competence. You don’t need to be a brilliant guitarist to play “Please, Please, Me”.
