Yeah, I knew they weren't necessarily great instrumentalists. I was trying to drill down to what made both bands great. I accept that they both were, although I couldn't really claim to be a fan of either, but I'm not really equipped to critique either.
They're both old people's bands, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (I speak as a fan of Edith Piaff and Ray Charles) but I hold no particular reverence for either.
So what, or who, made them musically great, given that an awful lot of Stones stuff seems to have been ripped off wholesale from the Delta?

The Beatles. Before they were famous, they famously did that stint in Hamburg where they had to play something like 7 or 8 hour days. Not only did they have to play pop and rock 'n' roll songs of the day but they also had to play a lot of songs from shows and films which were more musically complex than the pop songs of the day. This gave them a very good grounding and understanding of song structure and writing. Obviously they had a ton of natural talent to go with that.
The Stones. A bit different in that they were more steeped in blues from the start but they were talented enough to go with the changing fashion and do that mid 60s British pop thing. They had a one album stint at psychedelic rock before going back to their blues roots and coming up with 4 of the greatest albums in rock music. They were much more influenced by American music than the Beatles and their influences ranged from rock 'n' roll to blues, to country to gospelly soul but they still managed to carve out a genre for themselves that nobody else was really doing.
The Beatles were more innovative but I think that made them a bit more hit or miss than the Stones. Of course, the Stones had a longer life and probably more time to develop and settle in to their style. And not forgetting huge amounts of natural talent that comes from god knows where.

But, on balance, ABBA are as good, if not better, than both.
Happy New Year.

I was born in 1950 - so my teenage years were the sixties and then on into my twenties in the 70's.
The Beatles transformed pop - they were brilliant - from their days in Germany right through to Sargent Pepper - Abbey Road and the White Album.
But I never actually bought a Beatles album or went to any of their gigs.
I bought a great many of the Stones albums, I went to many of their gigs. I play their music my the car and when I hear Brown Sugar I want to dance.
The Beatles were intellectually and musically brilliant but when I want to Rock or when I hear the opening bars of Gimme Shelter - it's got to be The Stones.
I posted this on 6th. May 2021
Happy New Year to you all!

AI helps Paul McCartney release final Beatles song "The Beatles’ final single will be released this year after being completed with the help of AI, Sir Paul McCartney has disclosed. The musician said that advanced technology has been used to rescue the voice of John Lennon from a rough demo recording. AI has “extricated” Lennon’s vocals and Sir Paul has polished the track into what he has termed the “final Beatles record”. Sir Paul explained that new tech was “able to extricate John’s voice from a ropey little bit of cassette”. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/06/13/ai-paul-mccartney-release-beatles-song/

I think the whole of News General are fans of Mick Taylor era Stones. He was (still is?) a great guitarist and made them a more interesting band.

I have a contrary opinion on Mick Taylor. He's a brilliant guitar player but I'm not sure he was right for the Stones.

getting all nostalgic. still think the Beatles were better than the Stones, but the Stones had some monster hits. Satisfaction, Sympathy for the Devil, Paint It Black, Jumpin Jack Flash, Gimmee Shelter, Get Off My Cloud.

You're wrong about everything else so why change the habit of a lifetime.
Only a weirdo would think Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St and Goats Head Soup were "wrong" for the Stones.

Interestingly all recorded before we joined the EU. Think on. Not that I'd have GHS in the pantheon though.
