So today is the anniversary of the attempted coup in the US where the looser of the election sort to have himself installed as an authoritarian leader against the will of the people. One year on the risk to US democracy is, if anything, worse than when Trump tried to lead a violent uprising against the democratically elected gov. The GOP has gone from flirting with authoritarian ideas to fully embracing autocracy as a way to keep power.
What saved US democracy last year were the state clerks, AG's and governors (a lot of them republican) who refused to lie about the results or refused to 'find 11000 votes', sadly these stalwarts of democracy have been purged and lickpitle GOP party apparatchiks, who have vowed to overturn any result where they don't win, have replaced them in many red states now, that bulwark has gone. Though with the rampant disenfranchisement going hand in hand with these anti-democratic measures, they are hoping only GOP supporters will get to vote in future elections.
The 2020 presidential election could well be the last fully democratic election in the US, sure elections will be held, but they'll resemble elections in Russia, North Korea or Iran if nothing is done to stop this.
As for the traitors who became Trumps foot solders in his war against democracy, over 700 have now been arrested and the FBI are looking for 900 more, many have been jailed for up to 5 years. What's missing are the arrests of those who incited the revolt in the first place, they are sitting pretty, planning for next time, and they don't mean to fail next go round.
I saw that the % of GQP voters who believe the big lie is going up, egged on by a whole cabal of republican lawmakers who, despite pleading with Trump on the day to call off his mob as they cowered in the house or senate chamber, and condemning the insurrection in the days following, all have now bent the knee and kissed his ring and are spreading the big lie (despite them all knowing Trump lost by a landslide) as they fear if they tell the truth his mob will come for them.
