Guns overtook car crashes to become the leading cause of death for US children and teenagers in 2020, new research shows.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that over 4,300 young Americans died of firearm-related injuries in 2020.
While suicides contributed to the toll, the data shows that homicides form the majority of gun-related deaths.
More than 390 million guns are owned by US civilians.
According to the research - which was published this week in the New England Journal Medicine - the rise in gun-related deaths among Americans between the ages of one and 19 was part of an overall 33.4% increase in firearm homicides nationwide.
Homicides, the study noted, disproportionately impact young Americans.
Over the same time period, the rate of firearm suicides in the US rose by 1.1%.
The overall rate of gun deaths of all reasons - suicide, homicide, unintentional and undetermined - among children and teenagers rose by 29.5%, more than twice that of the wider population.

Well done, the car manufacturers.

I prefer the freedom to bare legs.
I wonder what proportion of the dead are of an African persuasion? Still defund the police, I suppose.

Driving instructors - surely
You may have the freedom and right to bare your legs mids but as a gentleman I would assume that you don't.

Maybe it’s just me but I genuinely don’t care about US gun deaths because Americans also don’t seem to care. Their right to bear arms and have guns flood their society seems to be something they relish so 🤷🏾♀️.
Sad for the victims though.

Perhaps you’re unaware of this but firstly not all the members of a group or nationality are the same. Secondly, what gets supported by members of the ruling party isn’t necessarily the actually popular position.

I am well aware that #notallamericans are pro gun fanatics but overwhelmingly American society does not seem to care enough to do that much about so I genuinely see no reason why I should care about the numbers of US gun deaths. Other developed countries genuinely seem fascinated by US gun culture and I cannot for the life of me fathom why.

"Did you just #notallmen?"
Haha. Straight out of a revolutionary committee.

You’re saying because some members of a group behave ridiculously and others of the same group can’t control them you write off the entire group? You did a “why aren’t Muslims marching against terrorism” “why aren’t blacks stopping murders in Chicago they don’t seem to care” on this.

You did a “why aren’t Muslims marching against terrorism” “why aren’t blacks stopping murders in Chicago they don’t seem to care” on this. I literally said “I know not all #notallamericans” and yet you somehow have decided that I said the opposite so clearly it’s touched a nerve. Good. Your analogies make zero sense. I have it said individual Americans are individually responsible for stopping individual shooters. US society is responsible for its gun laws - some random Mohammed isn’t responsible for the actions of some random Syed - are you smoking crack? There is no such country or political state as “Muslim”. US society as a whole does not seem that bothered - or not bothered enough to effect change so why exactly should I care? The news is the same over and over and over and over and over again - so I don’t care. Comparing the US response to its issues with gun deaths to the UK, New Zealand and Australian and how the latter three reacted after mass shooting…. The Yanks can figure it out among themselves if they want to. Not my circus not my monkeys.

It'll never be 'figured out'. Guns it is and guns it'll stay. I suppose it's why the majority of Americans seem always so polite. Thankfully we don't have the same gun laws here in France.

Nah. Most Americans seem friendly because they actually are.

It's not the guns - it's people not having the mental capacity to use them for the intended purpose . . to kill the bad guys. Most of America's gun violence is committed by a certain type of people who do not have the innate mental ability & maturity to use them properly

Nobody needs a gun unless they are in the military, or live somewhere with dangerous animals (and that means bears and elephants, not cows).
